Position Information
This position is located at Cobb County's Department of Transportation Headquarters. The purpose of this classification is to lead a maintenance workers engaged in operating equipment and performing maintenance and repair work on County roadways and other infrastructure as assigned.
This position will work four 10 hour days; depending on assignment, the schedule will be 6:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday.

Parental Leave Policy

Tuition assistance is available for you while you complete a college degree or certification. Reimbursable amounts are dependent upon available funding and will be proportionately distributed to all pre-approved applicants on a quarterly basis.

Essential Functions
Coordinates daily work activities; organizes and prioritizes project tasks; makes work assignments and evaluates work; monitors status of work; troubleshoots problem situations; and performs the duties of supervisor in absence of same.
Monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations; coordinates setup of work safety zones to maintain safety and traffic control at work sites, including flagging of traffic and setup of safety cones, barricades, and road/warning signs; monitors traffic conditions surrounding trucks/equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; and reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
Leads and participates in tasks involving street, roadway, and drainage projects; builds concrete forms for sidewalks and curbing; pours and finishes concrete; installs and removes sidewalks, curbs, driveways, and gutters; shoots grade for concrete; cleans, maintains, and repairs drains; constructs and repairs drain boxes, inlets, and manholes; installs drain pipes; repairs concrete pipes; repairs, maintains, and cleans ditches; lays and smooths asphalt; repairs asphalt and concrete; patches/repairs potholes and sinkholes; grades work sites; packs ground materials; installs street signs and stop signs; installs reflective markers in streets; paints markings such as turn lanes, crosswalks, and parking spaces onto road surfaces; builds, repairs, and paints street barricades; maintains street signal lights; and removes debris from sites of vehicle accidents.
Leads and participates in tasks involving grounds maintenance or roadside maintenance projects; mows grass; edges buildings, roadways, landscaped areas, driveways, and sidewalks; plants and maintains trees, shrubs, and flowers; cuts down trees; prunes tree limbs, hedges, and shrubs; picks up and disposes of tree limbs, brush, and other materials from grounds or right-of-way areas; spreads pine straw, mulch, sand, gravel, or other grounds materials; lays sod or spreads grass seed; applies fertilizer, pesticide, and herbicide; applies salt/sand during icy weather; rakes ground materials; blows leaves/debris from walkways or grounds; picks up and disposes of debris/litter from ground areas; empties trash containers; digs holes/trenches; and shovels materials.
Leads and participates in tasks involving building maintenance projects; cleans buildings, restrooms, or other facilities; mops, sweeps, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces; troubleshoots plumbing problems and clears stopped drains; troubleshoots basic electrical problems; replaces batteries, light bulbs, and ballasts; paints interior/exterior surfaces and equipment; repairs roofing; installs tile flooring; performs concrete and asphalt work; and pressure washes building surfaces and concrete areas.
Leads and participates in the installation and maintenance of signs and road markings; sets up work zone to protect installers from traffic; checks for legibility and reflectiveness; cleans and/or repairs signs; straightens or replaces signposts; puts cap on sign post and applies sign to sign post with punch, hammer, and rivets; drives anchor into ground with mechanical impact hammer; installs sign post into anchor; lays out markings described in blueprints; applies markings using thermoplastic, paint, or other material; checks existing markings for visibility; and repaints or reapplies markings as needed.
Leads and participates in tasks involving water utility operations; establishes service of new customers, sets new meters, and makes taps; inspects meters to identify leaks, high readings, damage, or illegal connections; installs and repairs water services; raises manhole lids; locates and repairs water/sewer lines; excavates ground around water/sewer lines; flushes sewer lines and manholes; makes water taps; maintains records of recorded and unrecorded cross-connection backflow installations; conducts backflow testing and enters test results into computer; and operates sewer pump stations and inspects pump stations to ensure proper operations.
Leads and performs functions associated with installation, maintenance and repair of water and sewer utility systems; locates water leaks, repairs pipe leaks; clears blocked pipes using sewer jet and vacuum; installs pipe; cuts pipes; digs holes or trenches; installs new services, fire hydrants and drinking fountains; turns water mains on/off; installs/replaces water meters; reads meters; loads and unloads trucks; and shovels materials.
Leads and participates in work for special events; places and/or changes seasonal flags/banners, holiday decorations and event banners; designs and fabricates custom signs for internal and external customers; paints designated areas in parking lots and recreation areas; determines street closures and placement of traffic control devices and warning signs; and sets up and maintains street closure and detours.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a service truck, dump truck, backhoe, mini-excavator, bobcat, salt spreader, brush truck, leaf truck, asphalt packer, bucket truck, mosquito truck, street sweeper, sewer flush truck, camera machine, smoker, pump, probing rod, locator, tractor, trailer, tamper, tapping machine, lawn mower, riding mower, edger, weed eater, chipper/mulcher, leaf blower, sod cutter, spreader, tiller, trencher, dragging equipment, chalk liner, paint machine, chain saw, power saw, hand saw, concrete saw, air compressor, pickaxe, sledgehammer, rake, post hole digger, shovel, hand tools, measuring instruments, or two-way radio.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, performing minor equipment repairs, greasing equipment, sharpening blades, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop or work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.
Gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies needed to conduct work activities; ensures availability of adequate parts and materials to conduct work activities; and initiates requests for new or replacement materials as required.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders, service tickets, notices, meter readings, vehicle/equipment maintenance records, or other documents.
Communicates with supervisor, other departments, employees, customers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Receives, prepares or completes various forms and documentation, including work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, diagrams, maps, manuals, reference materials, and other documents; and reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred; three years of experience in the construction, repair, and/or maintenance of public infrastructure or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses and Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including appropriate endorsements.
Must possess and maintain the following certifications: Flagging, Trenching and Erosion & Sediment Control.
Physical Abilities
Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, animal/wildlife attacks, or animal bites.
