Job description

About the Position: Serves as a Korean Language Teacher for the Undergraduate Korean School (UKP) at the Presidio of Monterey. The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) offers Foreign Language instruction in more than 13 languages on a schedule that extends throughout the year. Courses are taught six hours per day, five days a week, with the exception of federal holidays and training holidays.Qualifications:All qualified applicants who apply no later than midnight, March 24, 2024, will receive first consideration. Those who apply after March 24, 2024, will receive consideration during the next cut-off period. If you are referred and not selected or receive a letter indicating, 'you were ineligible because of missing documents,' you may modify your application package for this job announcement to receive further re-consideration.

  • This position is a TERM time limited position; tenure track. The initial appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 24 months, and may be extended upon mission, funding and management discretion.
  • Applicants who do not possess a current, valid U.S. work authorization may not be appointed for 24 months, but will receive an appointment aligned to their work authorization status, to include those who may only be appointed for less than one year, who will receive a TEMPORARY Tenure 0 (Adjunct) appointment. Employees on Temporary (Adjunct) appointments are not eligible to participate in Federal Employees Retirement (FERS), Thrift Saving Plan (TSP) and life insurance benefits.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant work experience and education level (degree and year awarded); official transcripts/foreign transcript evaluation will be requested upon selection.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in Korean fluently.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in English fluently.
Assistant Professor:
Ph.D. or Master's degree with a major or minor in Foreign Language Education, Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESOL/TEFL), Linguistics, Language (English included), Literature, Education, Educational Psychology, Educational Technology, Translation & Interpretation, Cross-Cultural Studies, or Educational Administration. (NOTE: Attach a copy of your transcripts for verification).
OR
Master's degree in any discipline and one year of directly related work.
OR
Bachelor's degree in any discipline and two years of directly related work.
DIRECTLY RELATED WORK: Formal classroom instruction of a language foreign to the students at high school level or above. Formal classroom instruction normally includes such activities as class preparation, course preparation/modification, testing, tutoring, and counseling in a structured, education environment.
If selected, applicant must pass a language proficiency test (OPI).
LANGUAGE EVALUATION: The minimum English proficiency is a Level 2 in speaking. The minimum proficiency for the language to be taught is a Level 3 in speaking. If a dialect is required, the minimum proficiency is also Level 3. The proficiency levels are defined by the Inter-agency Language Round table (ILR) level descriptions and can be viewed at http://www.govtilr.org. Failure of any portion of the language tests will disqualify applicants for a period of 6 months. Applicants may re-apply against an open vacancy announcement after 6 months if they wish to be considered again. If selected again, retesting is allowed only once.
You must submit a 300-word HANDWRITTEN essay in Korean. You must also include a 300-word HANDWRITTEN English translation of the essay. Essay topic is how your background, education and training has prepared you to be a Foreign Language Teacher. NOTE: Typed essays are NOT acceptable. The essay is not used to evaluate work experience, only for the purpose of evaluating the language writing proficiency.
