Position: Machinery Maintenance Mechanic

Reports To: Program Manager/Site Lead

Department: WAPA RMR - Technical Services

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Rate: $39.06 per hour ($34.65 base + $4.41 H/W)

General Function

Assist with fleet maintenance to maintain the Rocky Mountain Region vehicles and equipment fleet within the established fleet maintenance program. May be required to travel to perform vehicle maintenance work requirements at all RMR field locations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Vehicle management assistance, servicing, and maintenance appropriate to manufacturers' maintenance manuals.
  • Perform all record keeping and reporting functions required to include the following, but not limited to, tasks: Perform diagnostics and inspection on DOE and GSA equipment and vehicles, amount of time spent on each vehicle for reporting and costing purposes, all costs attributed to individual vehicles/equipment repairs, maintenance performed including establishing and completing work orders.
  • Coordinate maintenance with outside vendors, including obtaining cost estimates and locating vendors.
  • Coordinate warranty work with GSA and Vehicle Dealers.
  • Perform safety inspections of vehicles and equipment, and preventative maintenance.
  • Pick up, deliver, wash and clean vehicles.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance, including but not limited to: drive train repairs and overhauls, hydraulic systems repairs, minor bodywork, suspension and steering systems, braking systems inspection and repair as required by DOT, tire inspections, mounting and balancing, and repairs, installation and/or modification of accessory equipment, and electrical systems.
  • Analyze malfunctions, and repair, rebuild, and maintain specialized heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment, such as man lifts, diggers/cranes, cranes, motor graders, trench-digging machines, backhoes, and bulldozers.
  • Dismantle and reassemble equipment, using hoists and hand tools.
  • Weld broken parts and perform routine shop welding duties.
  • Test, repair, overhaul, modify, and maintain electrical equipment of a specialized nature, such as automatic alternators, voltage regulating equipment in motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and construction equipment, located at remote WAPA sites.
  • Maintain, modify, repair, disassemble, and/or overhaul hydraulic, pneumatic, and fiber optic systems and components that actuate mechanisms or produce, control, and regulate the flow of fluids (liquids and gases). Tests for and isolates malfunctions in hydraulic and pneumatic systems or components, utilizing technical manuals and schematics. Systems are on motor vehicles, heavy equipment and construction equipment.
  • Fabricating mounts and mounting accessory equipment on vehicles, including utility beds, winches, bumpers, generators, etc.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to repair equipment within time constraints due to causes such as power outages, conflicting customer requirements, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience with mechanical operations, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Understanding of electronics and computer systems as they pertain to motor vehicles, heavy equipment, and construction equipment.
  • Familiar with automated systems, work scheduling and logistics.
  • Qualified brake inspector IAW DOT 49 CFR 396.25 preferred.
  • Computer Skills: Basic
  • Drug Screen and Background Check: pass with ability to maintain throughout employment.

Minimum Experience

  • Education: High School Diploma/Equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience maintaining automotive, diesel & heavy equipment and completion of an accredited trade school program with demonstrated training in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, or 10 years of related mechanical experience maintaining automotive, diesel & heavy equipment.
  • Minimum of 5 years' working knowledge and experience in propane systems, gasoline and diesel equipment, power equipment, tools and test equipment.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements for tractor/trailer combinations, cargo tanks, or obtain such license within three months of employment.

Physical Requirements

  • Work may be performed in the following environments heated and unheated garages, outside, storage areas, and may perform emergency field repairs in the worst weather conditions, along highways, off highway transmission line right- of- ways and mountainous trail roads.
  • Physical ability to accomplish the work required by the position including standing, bending, reaching, climbing, crouching for long periods of time, lifting heavy loads, working in close, restricted quarters, working outdoors.
