MISSION:
It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.
JOB PURPOSE:
Under general supervision, performs duties in Food Services to include food preparation, cooking, serving, and delivering meals inside the SCDJJ facilities, and adheres to all policies and procedures that guide specific work and general state guidelines required of all state employees while providing excellent customer service.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cleans assigned areas of Food Services to meet guidelines and standards set by the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).
Organizes, plans, and directs the purchase, storage, preparation, and serving of food and the maintenance of Food Service equipment and facilities.
Establishes standards for production, quality, sanitation, and maintenance; makes frequent inspections to ensure that standards are maintained; inspects dry stores and refrigerated food to ensure optimum storage conditions.
Determines requirements for personnel, equipment, supplies, and food; prepares or assists with the budget for a Food Service department; requisitions, purchases, or approves the purchase of equipment, supplies, and food.
Follows work schedules and training programs. Demonstrates correct techniques of food preparation for maximum palatability and appearance and minimum waste.
Prepares or reviews the preparation of Food Service records and reports.
Works in the presence of and guides the work of adult inmates.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
There is no minimum training and experience requirements for this class.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Complete a manager's ServSafe requirement with a passing test score and any required Food Service safety training with a passing score and certification within one (1) year of employment.
Will have exposure to hazardous equipment, extreme heat, and freezing temperatures, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as necessary.
Must be able to work weekends/ holidays and first and second shifts.
Will require standing, bending, squatting, reaching, twisting, running, pushing, and pulling.
Requires knowledge of food preparation.
Must have extensive knowledge of methods, materials, and appliances used in good preparation and service.
Working knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures pertaining to food preparation and service.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youths within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youths within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
