1.Physiological: Basic - Provides individualized age specific care that supports physical functioning (under the direction of the Registered Nurse and within scope of extern program framework).
a.Nutritional Management - assist with or provides a balanced dietary intake of foods and fluids.
b.Pain Management - Alleviates and reduces pain to a level of comfort acceptable to the patient.
c.Communicates pertinent abnormal assessment findings and patient responses to RN.

2.Physiological: Complex - Provides individualized, age-specific care that supports homeostatic regulation (under the direction of the Registered Nurse and within scope of extern program framework).
.Fluid monitoring - collects and analyses patient data to regulate fluid balance.
a.Wound Care - prevents wound complications and promotes wound healing.
b.Monitors blood glucose levels, as indicated.
c.Oxygen Therapy - Administers oxygen and monitors its effectiveness.
d.Airway management - facilitates patency of air passages.
e.Skin Surveillance - Collects and analyzes patient data to maintain skin and mucus membrane integrity.
f.Surgical Preparation - Provides care to a patient immediately prior to surgery and verifies required procedures/tests and documentation in the clinical record.

3.Behavioral - Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports psychosocial functioning and facilitates lifestyle changes (under the direction of the Registered Nurse and within scope of extern program framework).
.Active Listening - Attends closely to and attaches significance to a patients verbal and nonverbal message.
a.Emotional Support - Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement during times of stress.
b.Collaborates with RN regarding patient's plan of care, teaching needs & documentation in patients record.
c.Teaching: Disease Process - Assisting the patient to understand information related to a specific disease process.

4.Organization of nursing care: Demonstrates ability to prioritize nursing care in collaboration with RN, based on individual patient assignment and unit activity and within scope of extern program framework.
.Prioritizes patient care based on patient's assessment findings.
a.Mutualizes goals with patient/family & RN including teaching/discharge plans.
b.Completes work/assignments within allotted time, reporting unfinished responsibilities.

5.Safety: Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports protection from harm (under the direction of the Registered Nurse & within scope of extern program framework).
.Develop awareness of patient presentation in life threatening emergencies.
a.Code Cart: familiarize with use and contents of emergency carts on designated unit.
b.Fall Prevention - individualize a plan of care based on patient assessment of fall risk.
c.Infection Control- Demonstrates competence in the performance of duties and responsibilities related to transmission based precautions.
d.Physical Restraints - assessment of patient related to restraints, in conjunction with WDH policy applies, monitors & removes restraining devices.
e.Collects and reports pertinent assessment findings.

6.Family: Provides age specific, individualized care that supports the family unit
.Family Involvement - Facilitates family participation in the emotional & physical care of the patient.

7.Continuing Education & Development: Acquires and maintains current knowledge and competency in nursing clinical practice
.Participates in ongoing educational activities related to practice area and clinical issues.
a.Acquires knowledge and skills appropriate to the specialty area and practice setting

8.Health system: Provides care that supports effective use of the health care delivery system
.Participates with the RN in discharge process
a.Implementation of physician orders with RN
b.Documentation - records pertinent patient assessment & findings in clinical record
c.Patient Rights Protection - protects the health care rights of patient
d.Appropriately utilizes the supply pyxis to manage patient charges

9.Equipment and procedural skills: Demonstrates competency in performance of procedures and skills
.Simple dressing change
a.Non-sterile dressing change
b.Uncomplicated IV removal
c.Blood pressure
d.Pulse oximetry
e.Suicide Precautions
f.Seizure Precautions
g.Application of heat and cold
h.12-Lead EKG acquisition
i.Telemetry monitoring
j.DVT Prevention
k.Feeding pump
l.NG tube irrigations
m.Administration of enemas, including SSEs
n.Specimen collections, including 24hr urine, clean catch UA, urine specimen from foley catheter
o.Diabetic Food Care
p.Ostomy/pouch emptying/changing
q.Post-op care - turn/cough/deep breath, splinting, incision, incentive spirometry
r.Foley insertion & removal
s.Traction set-up
t.Glucometer
u.Pyxis Supply Station
Qualifications
Experience Preferred/Desired
  • 3 months LNA experience, preferable in an acute care setting.

Education Minimum Required
  • Program must be approved by the state BON where their program resides.
  • Successfully completed Nursing Fundamentals course and additional clinical courses with minimum grade of "C".
  • Scheduled to graduate during the upcoming academic year.

Licensure and/or Certifications Required
  • AHA or ARC BLS, LNA
