Responsible for assisting the Public Works Supervisor and Working Foreman - Fleet with the day-to-day operations of the fleet maintenance division; and performing tasks of the Working Foreman - Fleet in their absence. Duties include but are not limited to: performing all levels of mechanical work on automobiles, squad cars, heavy/light equipment, and other City-owned vehicles and equipment. Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies.
- Diagnoses and performs necessary repairs on vehicles and motorized equipment. Performs preventive and routine maintenance on all City vehicles.
- Performs diagnostic analysis and mechanical repairs on all vehicle systems, including but not limited to electrical, hydraulic, transmission, air conditioning, heating, fuel and mechanical systems.
- Overhauls and/or rebuilds gas and diesel engines, as directed.
- Designs and implements minor modifications to existing equipment, as directed.
- Maintains maintenance and repair records on all City-owned vehicles and equipment.
- Conducts and assists in training other employees, including but not limited to: training employees on proper equipment operation, training employees on repairs and maintenance of equipment; and training employees on proper procedures in the completion of assigned tasks.
- Assists the Public Works Supervisor and Working Foreman - Fleet, as directed, in overseeing work projects, crew, and assuring proper task completion.
- Performs the duties of the Working Foreman - Fleet in their absence.
- Utilizes technology applicable to the field and/or general operations and implements available technology to accomplish work tasks.
- Assures compliance with all appropriate safety rules and regulations, including but not limited to: OSHA standards, City safety standards, and all other applicable safety regulations.
- Assists all maintenance divisions and other departments, as directed, in the required maintenance of City-owned properties.
- Performs snow and ice control for the City, including but not limited to: operating snowplow equipment (plow truck, loader, and small equipment), and sanding and salting.
- Performs other duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position as assigned by the City.
- Two years of full-time mechanic experience, or five years of part-time mechanic experience.
- Certified to complete DOT inspections within 6 months of appointment.
- Possess ASE Certification or become certified within 6 months of appointment.
- Possess or be able to obtain and maintain Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) within 6 months of appointment.
- Working knowledge of appropriate safety regulations and demonstrated ability to follow safe work practices according to law, City practices, and generally accepted safe work standards.
- Must be able to comply with federal Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Associate degree or completion of technical training program in a mechanically related field.
- Experience on diesel and heavy equipment or electronic vehicle systems.
- Experience on heavy duty trucks.
- Work is performed primarily at maintenance facilities. Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies. Shift may be changed with 7 days notice.
- Physical activities include bending, twisting, gripping, carrying, and shoveling.
- Ability to independently and repeatedly lift, move and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to carry and operate various types of equipment.
- Some tasks require work in confined spaces and use of personal protective equipment such as respirators, harnesses, and related equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather.
Pay Range: $30.85 - $39.50 per hour. Plus group benefits package and public pension enrollment. Starting pay rate dependent on qualifications.
Schedule: Full-time; non-exempt (eligible for overtime compensation). Monday - Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Must be available for extended work days, call back, shift schedule changes, snow and ice control, and other emergencies. Shift may be changed with 7 days notice.
Union: Position is represented by AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) and subject to the collective bargaining agreement.
