Position Summary
Saint John's Power House invites applications for the full-time, benefit eligible position of First Class Shift Boiler Operator.
The First Class Shift Boiler Operators are responsible for keeping the power plant operating at all times, working a rotating shift to provide coverage 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The individuals in this position must have knowledge and availability to work all shifts on a rotational basis. Boiler operators are subject to call back.
Responsibilities
• Responsible for maintenance of all equipment in power plant necessary for the operations, including but not limited to:
1. 3 multi-fuel boilers (natural gas and #2 fuel oil), operating at 180 P.S.I.
2. Steam turbine unit(s)
3. 4- 500 kW diesel generator units
4. Electrical switchgear to sync our electrical generators to public utility
5. 3 steam absorption chillers = 2,400 ton total
6. Multi-cell cooling towers for chillers
7. 2 steam driven turbine boiler feed water pumps
8. Electrical multi-stage boiler feed water pump
9. 2 ground water wells for potable water system
10. Aeration gravel filter system for domestic water
11. Maintain chlorine system for domestic water
12. 3 Zeolite water softeners
13. RO filtration system for boiler water
14. Brine reclamation system
15. 2 - 35 hp air compressors with filtration and dryers
16. Data acquisition system
17. Pumps and fans of various sizes
• Make minor repairs and adjustments to the above equipment as needed.
• Under direction of Power House Chief or Assistant Chief, start up and shutdown boilers, turbine generators, and auxiliaries.
• Monitor various steam, electrical, and building management system meters using computer based tracking, and report abnormalities
• Test boiler water to determine condition of water.
• Blow down all boilers on every shift according to results of boiler water tests.
• Mix chemical and adjust feed rate for boilers.
• Test safety equipment on all boilers (low water alarm, low water cut-off).
• Make adjustments in the generation of electricity according to thermal demand for heating or cooling.
• Take and record readings on all operating plant equipment, including boiler and chillers.
• Record reading of all plant meters daily.
• Responsible for day-to-day operation of domestic water system.
• Assist with equipment maintenance as directed.
• Responsible for general housekeeping, including sweeping and scrubbing floors, wiping down equipment, etc.
• Effectively communicate pertinent operation, equipment breakdown, and maintenance needs, etc. during shift overlap, verbally and/or via entries into a daily log book.
• Required to conduct operational checks at wastewater treatment plant as needed.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Actively participates in and promotes the occupational safety program and environmental practices of the department.
• This position must be available for call back after hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Performs other duties as required by the director or supervisor.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Valid US Driver's license.
• Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
• Minnesota First Class A engineer's license
• Ability to work rotating shifts as assigned by the Chief Engineer or his designee.
• Ability to think and act quickly in an emergency.
• Strong computer skills and ability to learn new technologies.
• Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, meters, and equipment in performing duties.
• Ability to operate bobcat loader and forklift.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision while using your own technical judgment.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures.
Physical Abilities:
• Possess normal sight, hearing, and physical dexterity, with the ability to lift 40 lbs. with or without assistance.
• Must be able to work off ladders, in tunnels, and in confined spaces.
• Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required by the duties being performed.
• Ability to work in varying climatic and temperature conditions.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Three years' experience in operating and/or maintaining boilers and turbines; or mechanical knowledge and aptitude to gain required experience/licensure.

VISION PLAN
This voluntary plan offers affordable vision coverage for routine eye exams, eyeglass lenses and frames, and contact lenses. Discounts on hearing exams and hearing aids are also included.
LIFE INSURANCE
The Order provides Basic Life and Accindental Death and Dismembement (AD&D) policy to employees. This insurance becomes effective on the first of the month following date of hire. The amount of term insurance is based on your annual salary as follows:

You may also purchase additinal life insurance increments of one, two, three or four times your annual salary. There is also a dependent life insurance package available.
Employer provided life insurance in excess of $50,000 is subject to imputed income
tax (a tax on the value of the premium).
VACATION
As a benefit to eligible employees, a paid vacation is made available. Vacation time is based on the number of hours worked and the years employed. Employees working 100% time receive the following:

13 days beginning of 3rd year to end of 5th year
16 days beginning of 6th year to end of 10th year
20 days beginning of 11th year and over
HOLIDAY PAY
Employees receive holiday pay. The Order recognizes ten official holidays during the calendar year. Holiday pay is computed on the basis of an eight-hour day for full-time employees. Leased employees may receive additional holidays.
SICK LEAVE
Full-time employees earn up to 9 days per year, pro-rated based on FTE. Sick leave is cumulative from year to year up to a maximum of 720 hours (90 days). Employees may use up to 160 hours per year of accumulated personal sick leave to care for ill family members not living in the employee's household.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY
After a year of employment, the Order provides disability coverage in the event of an illness or injury that prevents you from working. This plan provides a benefit that equals 60% of your basic monthly earnings to a maximum monthly benefit of $11,000. This benefit will be payable for the benefit duration, provided the employee is unable to perform the usual and customary duties of his/her occupation.
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS / HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS
These plans allow employees to set aside a portion of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay for IRS approved expenses.
TUITION ASSISTANCE - PREP SCHOOL
The tuition assistance plan is an educational grant provided by the Order to a qualified son or daughter of a full time employee toward meeting the tuition costs at Saint John's Preparatory School. The dependent must meet the eligibility criteria in order to receive this benefit. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit.
TUITION REMISSION - EMPLOYEE
Tuition remission is an educational benefit provided by the Order to full-time employees. A full-time employee and spouse (if applicable) are eligible for tuition free education benefits the first full semester after six months of employment. The payment of special fees is the responsibility of the employee. Full-time employees may enroll for one undergraduate course per term, which includes summer; up to a maximum of 2 courses per year. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit.
PARENTAL LEAVE
A three week (15 days) paid leave will be granted to eligible employees due to the birth or adoption of a child, pro-rated based on FTE. New employees are eligible for this benefit after twelve months of employment.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free counseling resource available to employees and immediate family members. EAP counselors can help you identify problems and concerns regarding family, marriage, emotions, alcohol or drugs, financial difficulties, legal issues and job stress. All contacts between you, your family, and EAP are provided as a benefit from the Order and are confidential.
RETIREMENT PROGRAM
The Order of Saint Benedict provides two 403(b) retirement plans: A Defined Contribution Plan and a Supplemental Tax Deferred Annuity Plan. These plans are administered by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA). Enrollment in the retirement plan will be effective the first day of the month following date of hire, unless the employee elects to opt-out.

Full-time and part-time benefit eligible employees may voluntarily elect to contribute to the Supplemental Tax Deferred Annuity Plan. A Roth option is also available.

This voluntary plan offers an additional level of financial protection for you and your family in the event of a serious accident or illness.
