Firefighter/AEMT and Firefighter/Paramedic

The City of Sandy Springs Fire Department is hiring certified firefighter/AEMT and firefighter/Paramedics for full time positions working a 24/48 hour shift.

The Sandy Springs Fire Department is a small, busy department with five stations comprised of 8 companies (2 aerials, one tower ladder, one heavy squad, and four engines). We are staffed with full time firefighter/EMTS and firefighter paramedics. Our three shifts are organized within a traditional rank structure with a Battalion Chief overseeing the work of Captains, Lieutenants, Fire Apparatus Engineers, and Firefighters.

  • Salary Schedule:
    • FF1/EMT - $53,636.00
    • FF1/PMDC - $58,936.00
    • FF2/EMT - $63,070.00
    • FF2/PMDC - $67,405.29
    • Annual COLA and performance bonus where eligible
    • Additional bonus money yearly for participation in a number of specialty teams (TEMS, TRT Squad, Bike Medics, Honor Guard, Fire and EMS Instructors, Arson Investigators)
    • 148 hours of overtime built into the yearly work schedule

Job Description
Under the direction of a Fire Captain/Lieutenant, the Firefighter I is responsible for conducting fire department emergency and non-emergency activities during an assigned shift; engages in emergency scene activities including basic firefighting and emergency medical care; directs and performs a variety of staff support functions; and performs related work as assigned.


Overview of Duties, Responsibilities, and Position Requirements

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. In addition, specifications are intended to outline the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the class and does not necessarily convey the qualifications of incumbents within the position.
Purpose of Classification
The purpose of this classification is to perform technical and specialized work functions associated with preparing for and responding to fire, rescue, and disaster emergency calls, with protecting life and property, with supporting fire safety, prevention and equipment maintenance activities, and with providing emergency medical treatment, medical transportation, and/or assistance to Firefighter/Paramedics.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Adheres to all city fire codes, ordinances and fire laws and regulations of the state in order to protect life and property; complies with all rules, orders, and instructions issued by superior officer.
  • Drives designated fire apparatus, emergency, and/or other fire vehicles to transport emergency/fire personnel and equipment to/from incident scene as necessary from any station.
  • Responds with assigned fire company to emergency calls involving fires, hazardous materials, and vehicle accidents; evaluates scene upon arrival; may direct traffic and control crowds.
  • Provides control of fire situation including suppression and extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, search and rescue of victims, salvage and overhaul; recognizes and preserves evidence of arson or other types of crimes.
  • Selects and properly operates fire service tools and equipment including fire hoses, nozzles, ropes, appliances, and the components of sprinkler and standpipe systems; strategically positions fire apparatus; monitors controls and gauges.
  • Locates water source; lays and connects hose, acts as nozzle or backup person in the direction of water streams, raises and climbs ladders, and uses chemical fire extinguishers.
  • Identifies dangerous building conditions, electrical emergencies, hazardous materials, and ancillary health hazards; mitigates hazardous materials incidents; takes/applies appropriate precautions and procedures; informs and/or evacuates individuals and implements appropriate medical protocols.

  • Provides emergency medical care as an EMT-I/A which may include basic first aid, checking vital signs, basic life support, patient assessment, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), spinal immobilization, starting IV fluids, maintenance, triage, defibrillation, inserting esophageal obturator airways, and/or other treatment; may assist patient with own medications per local protocols; implements infectious control procedures.
  • Assesses the effects of treatment; provides rehydration and first aid support during fire ground activities; provides emergency medical transport of injured persons as necessary; relays complete medical information to hospital personnel assuming the case.
  • Performs various types of rescue operations as assigned, such as extrication of individuals from structures, trenches, underground entrapment, machinery, or vehicles, searches and rescues of fallen victims in high angle rescue situations in which rappelling is necessary, and/or animal rescue.
Aids and assists with emergencies or incidents involving public transportation (I.e. Rail, Passenger Bus, Aircraft) as assigned; performs a variety of tasks associated with public transportation crises such as rescue, fire extinguishment, first responder medical assistance, and spilled fuel containment.
  • Aids and assists with emergencies or incidents involving multi-story/high-rise buildings as assigned; performs a variety of tasks associated with high-rise emergencies such as rescue, fire extinguishment, first responder medical assistance, and operating fire control systems.

  • Implements emergency techniques when trapped or disoriented; assists fellow firefighters and guides new recruits; maintains and wears protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus as designed.
  • Monitors and communicates effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications; exchanges information with dispatchers, medical professionals, and other department employees.
  • Prepares, decontaminates, inspects, inventories, repairs, and/or maintains fire equipment, apparatus, hoses, tools, materials, turnout gear, first aid equipment, and vehicles for safe operation; tests equipment on a regular basis; practices proper disposal of bio-hazard waste; fills air cylinders; performs post-fire clean-up.
  • Prepares pre-fire plans including layout of building and hydrant locations; checks fire hydrants for proper function.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relations with the public; attends community meetings; promotes and teaches fire safety and prevention; responds to questions and requests for information; investigates public complaints; executes disaster pre-plans as needed.
  • Maintains current field and code manuals, policy and procedures, employee handbooks, various maps, addresses, and related material for reference and/or review.
  • Attends shift meetings, seminars, drills, and training sessions as required to maintain knowledge of departmental and city operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with medical and rescue techniques and equipment.
  • Completes and prepares a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and various other documents associated with daily responsibilities of this position; maintains administrative records and files.
  • Cooperates with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and its officers or representatives when activities are related to investigations within city jurisdiction.

Additional Functions:

This classification is designated as a safety sensitive position, which is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods, as stated in policies adopted by City of Sandy Springs.
  • Maintains personal fitness and appearance to comply with uniform requirements and department guidelines and regulations.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties including; raising and lowering the flag, conducting fire station tours, securing station facilities, requesting/restocking supplies, preparing meals, general housekeeping and station cleaning, painting, polishing station metal, and basic grounds maintenance.
  • Answers the telephone; provides information, advice, and guidance; takes and relays messages and/or direct calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Substitutes for co-workers in temporary absence of same; provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Required to work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as deemed necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain Georgia Fire Standards and Training Council (GFSTC)
  • Firefighter certification AND National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Firefighter 1 certification.
  • Must possess and maintain Georgia and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate, Advanced Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic license.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or a GED Certification.
  • Must possess a valid US Driver’s License, must possess a GA Driver’s License at time of employment.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Have not been convicted of a felony in the past 10 years.
  • Must successfully complete all steps in the hiring process including:
  • Must pass a physical fitness assessment.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must successfully pass post-offer polygraph examination, psychological and medical evaluations and drug screen.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proof of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
  • Proof of National Professional Qualification (NPQ) Hazardous Materials Operations
