The Detroit Fire Department provides a safe environment for Detroit's citizens and visitors through public education enforcement of fire codes and deployment of efficient emergency response resources.
- Assist in the training of the fire fighting force by conducting basic training classes in the proper application of fire fighting techniques.
- Conduct in-service company training courses.
- Present information in a classroom setting on various fire fighting procedures.
- Instruct selected departmental personnel in proper driving techniques, methods of operation, including the care and maintenance of motor-driven fire apparatus.
- Observe the application of proper driving techniques and certify as to qualifications to operate fire apparatus.
- Explain safety practices.
- Demonstrate the safe operation of Detroit Fire Department issued equipment.
- Direct and observe practice performances and makes corrections.
- Oversee general drills and fire fighting problems.
- Set up and operate audio-visual equipment and other aids as required.
- Make recommendations and assist in the revision of training materials.
- Maintain records of activities, prepare reports and presentations.
- Assist in teaching medical classes such as CPR and continuing education.
- High School graduation or GED.
- Five (5) years of experience in the Detroit Fire Department
- Must meet the requirements of Fire Fighter Class Code: 32-10-17
- Certified Medical Fire Responder Minimum
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:
- Valid State of Michigan Operator license.
- Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council Instructor I Certification shall be required as a condition to remain in this classification.
- Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council Fire Officer I & II Certification or current state equivalent.
- Employees must be licensed by the State of Michigan to perform Medical First Responder (MFR) level work at a minimum.
- As a condition of employment, the department may require employees to perform medical related functions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of principles of learning and methods of teaching.
- Knowledge of modern firefighting methods.
- Knowledge of the operation of fire apparatus and rules and regulations pertaining thereof.
- Knowledge of recordkeeping software such as Fire Rescue 1, Smartsheet and current record keeping software used by the Detroit Fire Department.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of fire apparatus.
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and other related software.
- Skill in observation.
- Skill in physical and mechanical dexterity.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to drill and instruct fire fighting personnel in efficient fire fighting methods.

- Hazardous Materials Awareness A & O Certification
- Ability to demonstrate initiative and resourcefulness in handling unusual problems of instruction.
- Ability to operate Emergency Response Apparatus.
- Ability to courteously interact with departmental personnel and others.
Physical Demands
- Frequently engages in strenuous physical activity over long periods of time that requires good dexterity, coordination, stamina and strength, which may include operating motor vehicles as well as light and / or heavy equipment for an extended period of time.
- Expected to move about and ascend / descend (e.g. stairs, ladders, trees etc.) to accomplish tasks.
- Must be able to
- Drag 185-pound mannequin, while dressed in full PPE, distance of 25 feet.
- Carry 5-gallon foam buckets in each hand 50 yards.
- Assist with carrying a backboard with a 185-pound mannequin, minimum of 100 feet.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to conditions, which may include fumes, extreme heat and cold, loud noise, confined spaces, dust, hazardous chemicals, blood, bodily fluids, airborne pathogens, inclement weather, etc.
