Fire Science Data Specialist (Remote)

KBR's Science and Space division is seeking a Fire Science Data Specialist to support our Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation & Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/) near Sioux Falls, SD (http://www.siouxfalls.org).
This unique position blends project coordination and information with a motivation for contributing to the science of wildfire management. The Fire Science Data Specialist will work closely with the TSSC Project Manager to solicit, formulate, and document technical content for existing and future LANDFIRE products and services (https://landfire.gov/). This role ensures that the needs of partner agencies and the user community alike are fulfilled by time-driven, high-quality, and information-rich activities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide direction and oversight for the LANDFIRE Program websites including digital content management of data, product documentation, and management of distribution site functionality
  • Oversee development of data summaries, metrics, analytics on LANDFIRE data products on a routine basis
  • Provide technical content in support of LANDFIRE through consultation with subject matter experts and The Nature Conservancy LANDFIRE Communications Lead
  • Assist in editorial reviews and formatting of technical documents
  • Inform Program Leadership development of communication strategies and implement as directed

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Candidates must meet the requirements listed below to be considered for this position; please note required items on your resume.
  • Education: Must have Associates, Bachelors, or Masters degree, preferably in land cover science, geography, or other related discipline
  • Years of Experience: This position level requires BA/BS relevant study or discipline, with a minimum of 8 years total experience. Additional experience, and/or other education, may be considered as relevant qualifications for the position requirements. Must have minimum 2-3 years of recent and related work experience in land cover science with emphasis on project coordination and a strong interest in supporting the Fire Science community
  • Solid technical writing
  • Confident presentation style
  • Ability to inform and implement strategies that effectively describe project work and champion its products and services in the Fire Science community
  • Effective leadership skills that foster collaboration between project teams and partner agencies
  • Curiosity and motivation for analyzing, characterizing, and improving LANDFIRE processes and products
  • Efficient prioritization and execution of tasks while under pressure
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint)

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • Familiarity with the LANDFIRE program
  • Ability to apply the proper elicitation method to gather customer requirements via meetings, questionnaires, workflow storyboards, use cases and other methods
  • Ability to navigate and translate between technical and creative writing styles
  • Awareness of land cover validation principles and practices
  • Experience with remote sensing, geographic information systems, or wildland fire and fuel management programs
  • Good understanding of a wide variety of ecological systems and how they function both naturally and after disturbance
  • Specific coursework or relevant work experience in remote sensing, image processing, geographic information systems, geography, forestry, ecology, or fire behavior
  • Geospatial data management (especially raster data management) a plus
  • Proficiency in Sharepoint and Atlassian Jira

WORK LOCATION
This position supports a coordinated team across multiple locations and offers either remote work status or a hybrid remote - onsite schedule; some travel may be required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Threeyears of continuous residency in the US for issuance of a Government Security credential
  • The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for government facility access and user account

Experience and/or Education in lieu of these qualifications will be reviewed for applicability to meet these requirements.
