SUMMARY: Performs a variety of supervisory and technical work involved in fire suppression, medical care, hazardous materials abatement, and related activities. Directs and participates in all phases of emergency operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Supervises the maintenance of the station equipment, supplies, and facilities; maintains discipline and order on calls and in company quarters.

  • Records station activities; prepares a variety of reports; performs data entry.

  • Creates and maintains monthly work schedules for staff; provides detailed work instructions to assigned staff.

  • Directs and participates in the performance of in-station activities; cleans and maintains grounds and living areas; makes minor repairs to the station; assists with meal preparations; requisitions supplies.

  • Maintains and tests apparatus and equipment; prepares and submits repair requests.

  • Acts as a team leader and member on an assigned company for emergency and non-emergency operations; determines methods of fire suppression; supervises and participates in firefighting activities to include the lying of hose lines, directing of water streams, placing of ladders, ventilation of buildings, and rescuing of persons.

  • Operates fire engine and other emergency vehicles as needed; may perform paramedic duties.

  • Participates in, and presents educational and public relations programs to the community on fire safety, fire prevention, and other topics.

  • Maintains physical fitness level required to complete assigned duties.

  • Acts as Battalion Chief as needed.

  • Performs other duties as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

At least 45 college credit hours towards an Associate Degree in Fire Science or a related field preferred; AND six (6) years of fire ground operations experience, which includes some experience as supervisory or company officer; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.


Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, and techniques involved in firefighting and emergency operations.

  • Department policies and procedures.

  • Incident management system application during emergency operations.

  • Fire Department organizational structure, techniques, and processes.

  • State and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and legislation.

  • Flammable liquids, gases, chemicals, and toxic and combustible materials.


Skill in:

  • Establishing and operating an incident command post.

  • Remaining calm under pressure and in stressful situations.

  • Allocating Fire Department resources to meet community needs.

  • Operating a personal computer, standard software, and some specialized software.

  • Providing direction, supervision, and leadership to assign personnel.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Communicating clearly, both orally and in writing.

  • Analyzing incidents and developing operational strategies accordingly.


LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection issued Firefighter certification at the Advanced level or higher.

  • Department of State Health Services issued Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic level certification.

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection issued Fire Instructor 1 certification.

  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection issued Fire Officer 2 certification.

  • Valid State Class B driver's license, Exempt Commercial license preferred.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a fire station and various conditions while responding to calls. Incumbent will be subjected exposure risk to biohazards associated with blood borne and airborne pathogens, fire hazards and unsafe conditions and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, hazardous chemicals and materials, intense heat, extreme cold, natural and man-made disasters and hazards associated with working in and near traffic; proper safety procedures must be followed including the use of personal protective equipment.
