This is a closed promotional examination limited to employees in the classification of Firefighter or Firefighter/Paramedic with the City of Canton, Ohio Fire Department.
To be eligible for the examination, candidates must have completed at least five (5) years of service as a Firefighter or Firefighter/Paramedic on or before Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

Job Description
General Statement of Duties:
Directs and supervises the activities of a fire company and the station activities of the other companies assigned to the same station; does related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
A Fire Captain is in command at the scene of a fire until a superior officer arrives. He/She is responsible for proper placement of equipment and assignment of personnel to stations. He/She leads in the performance of physical tasks involved in firefighting and has a high degree of responsibility for the protection of life and property. The work also involves responsibility for the maintenance of station equipment and the fire station with the Fire Captain charged with responsibility for planning and inspecting station and equipment maintenance functions. Duties require thorough knowledge of firefighting practices and ability to plan and direct the work of firefighters under hazardous conditions. Work is carried out according to general procedures outlined by superiors with wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision is exercised over firefighters to whom specific assignments are made and whose work is checked in process and upon completion.
Examples of Work:
Plans and inspects equipment and station maintenance activities. Directs and supervises the activities of a fire company in its quarters, its travels to and from a fire, and its operation at the scene of a fire. Conducts company schools and drills on modern firefighting methods. Makes preplans of hotels, schools, apartments, hospitals, manufacturing establishments and other properties. Maintains records, makes reports and requisitions supplies. Daily checks the condition of apparatus and appliances for correct working order. Gives or supervises emergency victim care of injured persons and oversees their removal to hospitals when necessary. Supervises the cleaning, checking and replacement of tools and equipment following a fire. Oversees fire inspection and prevention activities of fire company. Oversees testing of fire hydrants for flow, pressure, condition, accessibility and location. Keeps records and makes reports. Participates in individual and group advanced training courses. Trains and issues instructions to firefighters in fire inspection and other prevention activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting equipment and methods; ability to plan out work for subordinates and to maintain discipline; ability to recognize fire hazards; good knowledge of the geography of the City tact; physical strength and agility; good physical condition.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
Considerable experience as a firefighter and graduation from a standard high school, with completion of one or more courses at a recognized fire training school highly desirable; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Five (5) years minimum as a State Certified Firefighter.
Testing Information
This will be a two-part examination: a written exam, which will be weighted at 40%, and an assessment center, which will be weighted at 60%. For the written exam, a minimum score of 75% must be achieved in order to advance to the assessment center portion. Credit will be given for seniority after the two examinations are weighted in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code and the Rules and Regulations of the Canton Civil Service Commission, provided a passing score of 70% on the assessment center exam is attained.
The written examination will be held April 2, 2024. Check in will be from 1:00pm to 1:30pm. Applicants will be admitted to the test site only upon presentation of their valid State of Ohio Driver's License or other valid photo identification card to the examiners. The location of the examination will be determined at a later date. This exam will take approximately two hours to complete.
Resource Management Consultants (RMC) will provide the written exam and the questions for the exam will be taken from the following materials:
1. Fire and Emergency Services Company Officer, 6th Edition, IFSTA (ISBN 9780879396503)
2. Fire Officer's Handbook of Tactics, 5th Edition, John Norman (ISBN 9781593704186)
3. Brannigan's Building Construction for the Fire Service, 5th Edition, F. Brannigan & G. Corbet (ISBN 9781284136135)
4. Structural Firefighting: Truck Company Skills & Tactics, 2nd Edition, IFSTA (ISBN 9780879393878)
Resource Management Consultants (RMC) will conduct the assessment center portion of the examination, to be held on April 27, 2024 (and April 28, 2024 if the Civil Service Commission deems it necessary). Eligible candidates will be notified of the date and time of their assessment exam. The assessment exam will be conducted in the Canton Civil Service Commission Office.
SENIORITY
Credit will be given for seniority in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code and the Canton Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations provided a passing score is attained on both exam components.
