POSITION TITLE: Financial Counselor
DEPARTMENT: Business Office
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for initial contact and follow-up on private pay patient
accounts as well as verification of insurance on all inpatient admissions.
JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
Responsible to: Director of Patient Financial Services
Nature of supervision received: Direct

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.
The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.
1. Discuss private pay account balances with patients.
2. Reviews self-pay admissions for accuracy.
3. Directly visits and discusses financial assistance availability to
in-house patients.
4. Prepares financial assistance application forms and information for
those patients who may be eligible.
5. Review and transfers accounts to collection agencies.
6. Demonstrates excellence in customer service skills.
7. Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
8. Performs other duties that may be assigned by supervisor or Director
of Patient Financial Services.
9. Complies with Corporate Policies, Departmental Policies and
Procedures and Personnel Employee Handbook.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:
High school education or equivalent.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
One year of collection, telephone, computer and insurance experience
related to the medical profession required, two years preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Typing and basic mathematical skills with a working knowledge of medical
terminology as well as the ability to communicate clearly with patients and insurance companies over the phone and in person.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must demonstrate manual dexterity to operate equipment in the Patient
Accounts office. Must be able to withstand long periods of sitting. Must demonstrate visual acuity for reading computer screens. Must demonstrate abilities generally associated with this position.
EXPOSURE CATEGORY:
Category III. Tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids or
tissues. Category I tasks are not a condition of employment.
