Position Summary:

The Director of Technical Activities functions as the leader of the FASB staff and principal advisor to the FASB Chair. The role is also the primary representative of the FASB to stakeholders, including regulators, accounting firms, companies and investors in communicating FASB staff views on technical accounting matters. Reporting to the FASB Chair, this role includes leading and managing the FASB’s 70+ staff, projects on the FASB’s technical and research agendas, XBRL, the FASB budget, supporting and enhancing FASB operating policies, procedures and process improvements, and FASB project-related communications (press etc.).

The Director of Technical Activities oversees the operation of activities associated with advisory groups and councils. The Director of Technical Activities has frequent interaction with FASB stakeholders outside of advisory groups and councils including those that represent certain industries and committees of the AICPA. The Director of Technical Activities also has primary oversight for reviewing and maintaining the content of the Accounting StandardsCodification.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and direct staff work on all technical accounting projects in accordance with FASB due process requirements.
  2. Ensure quality control review of all draft documents (including board memorandums, due process documents, and other requirements).
  3. Ensure that project plans are consistent with the goals and priorities identified by the Board and recommend changes when appropriate.
  4. Direct the technical inquiry process including issue resolution and review of documentation of issues.
  5. Hire, train, assign and evaluate performance of staff and direct reports for promotion and succession planning.
  6. Primary responsibility for managing the FASB board agenda, including timing, sequencing of issues, and considering topics (in conjunction with the FASB) for the future agenda.
  7. Ensure the execution of special projects including as directed by the FASB Chair.
  8. Serve as main staff contact for regulators (SEC, PCAOB and Banking Regulators), AICPA and IASB on cooperative matters relevant to technical issues.
  9. Represent the FASB in a variety of speaking engagements.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  1. High degree of expertise in financial accounting and reporting and its practical applications in the business environment.
  2. Thorough knowledge of research methodology and the due process methods of operation of the FASB.
  3. Thorough understanding the management functions of planning, budgeting, organizing, and directing activities and people to accomplish results and increase efficiencies.
  4. Excellent working knowledge of the conceptual framework.
  5. Excellent working knowledge of GAAP and IFRS.
  6. Demonstrated leader in managing multiple projects and large teams.
  7. Excellent written and oral skills to communicate ideas to a wide range of interested parties, reconcile divergent views and develop solutions.
  8. A minimum of 15-20 years of related experience in either public accounting or industry.
  9. A partner of a global accounting firm would qualify.
