Louisiana Tech University seeks a full-time Farm Supervisor to join the School of Agricultural Sciences & Forestry. The School is home to 18 faculty and 9 staff serving approximately 400 students in Agricultural Business, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Forestry, and Geographic Information Science degree programs. Tech Farm's primary function is to support agricultural education and research, and it plays an integral role in providing Louisiana Tech students with practical, experiential learning opportunities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Tech Farm Supervisor is responsible for all Tech Farm facilities, equipment, personnel, animal units, and operations. Tech Farm consists of two units (South Campus, Simsboro) that comprise more than 1,000 acres of farmland lying in close proximity to Louisiana Tech's main campus in Ruston. Its expansive operations include a 110-head cow-calf beef cattle operation, a sheep/swine unit, a 15-horse teaching equine unit, agronomy fields, pasture, and hayfields supporting 480 tons of hay production. The position strategically, efficiently, and responsibly manages the farm's annual operating budget and revenue accounts. Tech Farm complements and is managed in coordination with related auxiliary agricultural facilities, including a meats processing facility, production greenhouse, and farm salesroom. The Tech Farm Supervisor oversees and works in close coordination with the Livestock Manager, Assistant Livestock Manager, and a host of student workers. The position collaborates with School faculty and staff, and partners with them upon request on the production of animal and plant science teaching labs, animal science research projects, public outreach and FFA career development events, and Louisiana Tech student organization activities. The position frequently communicates with university, state and federal officials, and is instantly responsive on a 24-hour basis to situations and incidents that occur on the farm.
QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. degree in an Agricultural Science or related field required; M.S. degree preferred. Experience in farm and/or agricultural production facility operations. Evidence of general and practical animal science knowledge, and experience and expertise in tasks that support the farm's equipment, facilities, and functions. Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills. Demonstrated integrity and professionalism in a team setting. Commitment to serving the School's mission and meeting the needs of faculty, staff, and students. Flexibility in scheduling - including availability during nights, weekends, and holidays - is a must. Candidates holding an M.S. degree are eligible for the additional title of Instructor, and may teach one or two select classes on subjects that align with the candidate's expertise and the School's needs.
