SUMMARY:
To provide direct support and ongoing case management to refugee/migrant/ multilingual/ homeless/ disadvantaged families and/or students. The Family and Community EngagementSocial Worker/Counselor works in collaboration with the Director of Mental Health, Registration Office, Counseling Department, Director of ESL, and the Director of Alternative Programming to cultivate a student/family-centered approach to service provisions/acquisition.

- Work with refugee/migrant/homeless families, who are residing in shelter care, to remove barriers to housing, medical insurance/care, and ensure that they are connected to the means of ongoing support for self and family.
- Work as the McKinney-Vento liaison for the district.
- Provide ongoing cultural orientation to newly arriving families/students as part of the adjustment process, with an emphasis on educating them on any benefits, programs, etc. they may qualify for in need areas such as housing, education, employment, medical care, etc.
- Work within the Registration Office to assist with the registration process for multilingual/refugee/migrant families; including assisting families with the required paperwork and releases of information.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Alternative Programming to ensure students receive appropriate therapeutic and supportive services.
- Conduct house visits as needed; in partnership with another BPS employee
- Develop collaborative relationships with the School Counseling Department(adjustment counselors/social workers, school counselors, and school psychologist) and ESL Director and department.
- Develop effective parent engagement practices that are culturally and linguistically responsive and inclusive to all groups represented in our district.
- Performs any other relative duties as requested by the Director of Mental Health or Assistant Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The qualifications listed below are preferential to the duties and responsibilities as listed in the job description, but may be waived at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools.
- Masters Degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, School Counseling, or a related field and the appropriate DESE license or willingness to work towards licensure is required. Holding a license of a LCSW, LICSW, or LMHC is preferable.
- Proficiency in written and verbal Spanish or another language is preferred.
- At least three years of professional experience in working with families, children, and Community agencies is preferred.
- Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of community-based resources including but not limited to; MassHealth assistance/applications, emergency shelters, the Department of Transitional Assistance, RAFT applications, etc.
- Effective communication skills - including written and oral communication, and use of technology tools to facilitate collaboration among teachers.
- Excellent problem solver, communicator, and listener.
- Able to work collaboratively with others and to lead and to implement effective change.
- Able to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with administration, students, peers, and parents
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with District staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students and parents.
- Ability to prioritize work assignments and complete work within time requirements.
- Ability to invest the time and meet expectations of the role including participation in training programs.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and School Committee policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and travel between work sites. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds for example equipment, supplies, and books. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination is necessary. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with students, parents, and staff.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside, but at times may work in an outdoor environment that is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

$80,000 - $100,000
