About

The Oak Park Public Library strategically prioritizes equity, anti-racism, engagement, learning, and stewardship. Under the supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, the Facilities Worker performs various tasks, such as general maintenance, cleaning, and repairing library buildings, facilities equipment, and grounds, to advance the library's vision, mission, and strategic direction.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains the buildings, equipment, and grounds
  • Performs repairs, including a variety of plumbing maintenance and carpentry functions
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for staff and public
  • Repairs lighting systems, replace ballasts and fixtures
  • Provides routine maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting support on the automated materials handling system
  • Prepares facilities for daily operations and closing, including basic start-up and shut-down of building equipment
  • Performs basic and routine preventive maintenance on building equipment
  • Repairs and paints surfaces and walls
  • Maintains outside grounds, including cleaning, removing snow/ice from sidewalks, and minor landscaping tasks
  • Drives a library vehicle to complete daily pickups and deliveries
  • Fulfills work orders, including meeting space setups
  • Assembles and moves furniture, unloads trucks, and distributes materials
  • Takes the initiative to look up and complete tasks, including work tickets, assigned jobs, staff requests, and unreported building needs


Education and Experience

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred

  • Degree in a relevant field from a technical college
  • Two years of work experience in a building maintenance-related capacity


Required Qualifications

  • Ability to operate mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment
  • Familiarity with tools used in carpentry and equipment maintenance
  • Electrical knowledge, including reading a multimeter and following safety procedures
  • Comfortable working on ladders
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and independent thinking
  • Ability to comprehend instructions and work safely and independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public
  • Ability to safely operate a library vehicle
  • Must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule and respond to building emergencies, including evenings, weekends, after-hours, and holidays


Details

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 399, represents the library’s Facilities Workers.


This position is full-time, 40 hours per week, and includes paid time off, health insurance, pension plan, and other competitive benefits. The hourly rate is $24.34. Please apply by Sunday, March 24, to be considered for this position.
