Job description


Primary Purpose:
Performs a variety of building maintenance services and repairs on all City-owned facilities and properties including but not limited to City Hall, Public Services Building and accessory structures, Public Safety Buildings, Train Stations, Karger Center, Senior Center, Public Garages, and other ancillary buildings and properties. Also included is maintenance of Business District amenities and associated garages.
Supervision Received:
Works under the immediate supervision of the Facilities Supervisor.
Typical work hours for this position will entail work between 7 AM and 3:30 PM, but limited to approximately 30 hours per week and not to exceed 130 hours per month. Preferred work hours: M/F: 7 AM to 2 PM and T/W/R: 7 AM to 12 PM. IMRF pension eligible position.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Interdepartmental services and assistance including mail delivery, snow removal, furniture placement/relocation, provide assistance to office staff in various projects.
  • Works with City personnel for any building issues (climate control, odors, smoke, spills, damage, emergencies and repairs)
    • Assists with maintaining building security and immediately responds to building
    • Monitors and replaces light bulbs in all assigned facilities, as needed
    • Makes minor plumbing repairs, as necessary
    • Coordinates and assists with departmental and employee moves
    • Performs basic electrical work and determines when an electrician is required
    • Hangs pictures and shelving, as needed
    • Dismantles and installs furniture
    • Transports goods or equipment as assigned
    • Performs immediate cleaning duties necessary to maintain a clean facility
  • Administers and documents routine building inspections including safety-related functions and safety equipment testing.
  • Assists in the administration and management of contractors to ensure adherence to contractual specifications and obligations involved in the maintenance, repair and custodial work for all City-owned and leased facilities.
  • Operates and assists with equipment including but not limited to facilities equipment such as floor scrubbers, vacuums, lifts, chemical dispensers, hand power tools and other motorized equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as requested.


Required Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Experience:
Satisfactory work-related experience in facilities maintenance or construction trades. Building maintenance certifications is a plus.
Certification or license:
A valid driver's license is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Proficiencies:
A background in building maintenance and custodial operations, including mechanical and electrical building equipment; ability to make minor carpentry repairs and improvements; exercise good judgment, maintaining confidentiality, and making responsible decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures; prioritizing, organizing, and performing work independently; ability to utilize a personal computer, typically for accessing and sending emails; may also require minor data entry necessary to track or perform work of the department.

  • Becomes familiar with and observes all applicable safety policies and procedures.
  • Immediately reports all unsafe conditions.
  • Keeps work area clean, orderly, and free of hazards.
  • Adheres to all safety rules and established work procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate physical fitness to perform essential job functions.
Work Environment:
Repairs and maintenance work is performed under all climatic conditions: rain, snow, wind and high temperatures and humidity. During office work, noise level will be low to moderate. Under most field conditions, the noise level will be modest to moderate; in some conditions, the work environment may be loud and require hearing protection.

Tools and Equipment Used:
Cleaning equipment, general building equipment (construction, electrical and plumbing equipment); may require some computer knowledge, and occasional use of office equipment including copier, printer, scanner, fax machine, and portable radio.
