About the Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking a self starter able to work in a fast-paced environment, with experience in facilities, equipment and mechanical systems maintenance and repair. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, customer service focused and have journey-level building maintenance and repair experience.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Inspects, reviews, and evaluates buildings, facilities, and equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs; estimates time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned; picks up and delivers supplies and materials to job sites, and requisitions materials
  • Services, adjusts, and performs minor mechanical repairs on heating and air conditioning systems; regulates valves and thermostats on boilers and air conditioning and performs minor repairs of HVAC equipment.
  • Maintains and repairs plumbing systems; installs water heaters, cleans out sewer lines, services and maintains electrical equipment and services and repairs door locks and latches.
  • Performs skilled mechanical work in repairing and remodeling existing equipment; performs light welding; repairs and rebuilds motorized cleaning equipment.
  • Performs various mechanical and maintenance tasks for facilities; erects scaffolding when needed, repairs pipes and fixtures, maintains flooring, maintains doors and locks, and repairs furniture.
  • Constructs, installs and repairs structures and fixtures using carpenter hand and power tools in conformance with local building codes; builds, repairs, modifies, and installs counters, cabinets, benches, floors, doors, baseboards, desks, tables, bookcases, shelves, windows, building framework, trim and miscellaneous furniture.
  • Reads blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to materials required and dimensions of the structure or fixture to be fabricated; prepares drawings.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools used in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of City structures and facilities including lathes, planers, jointers, presses, and sanders.
  • Maintains records of time and materials expended; prepares activity reports and recommends acquisition of materials and supplies; instructs and directs the work of assigned helpers.
  • Operates small trucks and forklifts and performs utility duties such as loading, hauling and unloading of furniture, materials, and supplies.
  • Maintains fire and life safety equipment; performs biannual flushing of sprinkler systems and annual inspections of fire extinguishers.
  • Maintains as-builts on all building and facilities changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High School Diploma, or G.E.D.; AND three (3) years of progressively responsible building maintenance and construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses, Certifications, and EquipmentA State of California driver's license.
Supplemental Information
City Benefits:
The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
  • Retirement - Participation in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). Tier I Employees hired before 10/3/11: CalPERS 2.7% at 55; Classic members with less than 6 months separation: CalPERS 2% at 55, single highest year plan. New members, CalPERS 2% at 62, three highest year average plan.
  • Health Insurance - Monthly contribution of $715.00 (Employee Only), $1,289.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,724.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual "Health Insurance Waiver Stipend" of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave - Vacation beginning at 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually, 12 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance - The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
  • Other - Optional Deferred Compensation Plan, flexible benefits plan, pre-tax childcare plan, employee assistance program, and all other benefits which are received by General Unit employees of the City per Memorandum of Understanding.

New members will be obligated to pay 50% of the "normal cost" of their retirement benefits as required by State law.
