The Iowa Veterans Home is looking for an Independent, self-starter to fill the position of Executive Secretary. This is an at-will position that reports directly to the Commandant.
The successful candidate will be expected to understand the Commandant's vision and
directives, is expected to work independently to accomplish all listed duties and responsibilities, works closely with residents who come to the Commandants Office, and will effectively represent the Commandant at veteran events throughout the state or community events locally.
Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Manage schedule of the Commandant, serve as the primary point of contact to schedule the Commandant’s meetings with residents and staff.
  • Consolidate input from Department’s Bureau Chiefs, calendar entries, significant events, accomplishments, requirements, and awareness issues, publish in a monthly newsletter, distribute to staff.
  • Organize place and time for quarterly commission meetings and ensure that those are published in a timely manner. Serve as point of contact for agenda items for the quarterly commission meetings.
  • Serve as the primary Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs liaison between the Commandant and the Department’s Bureaus, Legislative Liaison, Public Information Officer, the Iowa Commission of Veterans Affairs, the Policy Advisor with the Office of the Governor, and other State Agencies.
  • Represent the Commandant and the Department of Veterans Affairs at meetings and events throughout the State, as required.
  • Work with the Commandant to establish and develop effective partnerships with State agencies, high schools, community colleges, universities, and non-governmental organizations to enhance staffing levels, propensity to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces, improve quality of life for residents of the Iowa Veterans Home, and build awareness of our department with our stakeholders.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to six years of full-time work in a secretarial or administrative support capacity for a manager/administrator of a major program area;

OR

certification from the State of Iowa Administrative Assistant Certificate Program will substitute for six months of the required experience;
OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting thirty semester hours of accredited undergraduate coursework for one year of the required experience to a maximum of four years.
