Job Description

Alabama State University, Institutional Advancement, invites applications to fill the position Executive Directorof Marketing and Strategic Communications. The position reports to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. The Executive Directorof Marketing and Strategic Communications serves as the Chief Communications Officer for the University. This leader will develop and advance integrated Marketing and communications plans to position Alabama State University as a global leader for academic excellence, engagement, educational opportunity, and leadership development. The Executive Directorof Marketing and Strategic Communications is responsible for developing and directing communications and marketing initiatives, in collaboration with other organizational units and alignment with institutional goals, across a variety of print, online, digital and radio platforms. Supervisory responsibilities include news and communications, web communications, Marketing and creative services, photography and multimedia development. Additionally, the Executive Director will oversee community engagement initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Understand FOCUS 2030, The Strategic Plan For Alabama State University
  • Oversees the writing of presidential speeches, town hall events, and other presentations or reports made by the University President. Reviews all presidential speaking points and correspondence to ensure accuracy of message, facts and tone
  • Advises and supports the University President & Vice President for Institutional Advancement regarding interactions with the media, stakeholders, and general public, serving as a co-strategist and content manager on messaging. Ensures the University President & Vice President for Institutional Advancement is well briefed and highly productive with respect to communications-related activities. Similarly guide and support senior administrators, deans, faculty and other community members in their capacity as formal university representatives
  • Work with the VP for Institutional Advancement to develop a Strategic Plan for the Department of Marketing and Strategic Communications
  • Lead a centralized Marketing and communications team in the areas of web communications and management, creative services (graphic design), Marketing and brand strategy, social media, campus news services and crisis communications
  • Develop, execute and assess communications and marketing strategies to promote the university's brand, enhance its reputation, engage stakeholders in the university's mission, and support institutional enrollment goals
  • Direct the Marketing and advertising for the University, promoting all aspects of the University to prospective students via media such as radio, television, billboards, social media and other forms of communication
  • Work with the VP of Institutional Advancement and the Creative Services specialist to establish and publicize the University's brand standards, and help to enforce compliance with those standards
  • Collaborates with internal and external groups such as the Foundation, National Alumni Association, Student Government Association, elected officials and dignitaries, etc.
  • Work with Office of Development and Alumni Relations on specific strategic philanthropic/stakeholder engagement initiatives
  • Assist with identifying a marketing partner for the University and assist with the oversight of that partner's activities on behalf of ASU
  • Supervise social media strategy and implementation
  • Become knowledgeable of University degree offerings and other marketable assets of the University
  • Manage the University’s public radio station,WVAS as a platform for engaging potential and established stakeholders and for providing ASU oriented programming
  • Attend conferences to further marketing knowledge
  • Work with the University's graphic design team to create publications and marketing/promotional materials
  • Write copy/oversee writing of copy for advertisements and promotions
  • Oversee/direct video/radio production processes as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in marketing or a closely related field, demonstrated experience in communications planning, project management and execution, resource allocation, and staff leadership, and have high-level proficiency in print media. Master's degree and 5 or more years of experience and progressive leadership roles in a higher education or related non-profit organizations preferred.
