Job description

Friends of the Alameda Free Library (FAL), located in Alameda California, is looking for a highly skilled Executive Director to work with, and report to, the Board of Directors in transforming FAL from its current state to a more dynamic non-profit organization, delivering on its long-term vision and goals.

Reporting to the President of the FAL Board of Directors, the Executive Director will oversee the strategic and operational efficiency of FAL programs. This seasoned leader not only understands current trends in the non-profit community, but also has proven experience developing, implementing and overseeing community outreach programs, strategic planning, public relations, marketing and an actionable fund development plan to ensure the financial health of the organization. Prior experience is essential; established relationships with local community groups is a plus. Above all, the Executive Director should be comfortable in a leadership role that demands clear communication, excellent interpersonal relationship building and facilitation skills. The ideal candidate will have a passion for libraries and literacy.

Role Objectives

  • Develop, implement and execute strategic plans to meet FAL goals and objectives, in collaboration with the Board
  • Partner closely with the Board of Directors and FAL committees to inform, assess, and address issues that affect the organization
  • Oversee daily operations, by providing clear and aligned direction of program strategies: community outreach, volunteer engagement, public relations, marketing, fund development and program efficiency
  • Represent FAL and increase public awareness by serving as spokesperson/liaison with local media and community
  • Comply with all applicable federal, state, and local legislation

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • Set and meet aggressive annual fundraising goals to secure financial support from foundations, corporations, individuals, and government funding sources; work with Board on annual fundraising events
  • Oversee external communication materials including, website, marketing materials, newsletters and social media content
  • Serve as the face of FAL by actively participating in external community events; increase FAL visibility, credibility and brand awareness in the community cultivate strategic partnerships to increase community awareness
  • Drive and optimize FAL programming and volunteer pipeline opportunities
  • Build an effective team to fulfill FAL’s vision and mission through impactful program implementation, community engagement, and fundraising targets and events
  • Perform routine administrative duties: Process incoming mail, deposit and write checks and manage legal issues and insurance contracts.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 4+ years of management and or leadership experience, preferably with a nonprofit
  • Strong public relations, marketing, and fundraising experience
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles related to nonprofits
  • Proven success working with a Board of Directors
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with innovative approach to planning
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills
  • Knowledge of current technology platforms including those for managing donations and volunteers used by nonprofit organizations
  • Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organization
  • Works collaboratively with the Board and committees
