The Attorney General and the Department of Justice, collectively referred to as the New Mexico Department of Justice, represent and defend the legal interests and sovereignty of the people of the State of New Mexico. The NMDOJ exercises the responsibilities delegated by the New Mexico Constitution, statutes enacted by the New Mexico Legislature, and the common law. The Attorney General has primary authority for enforcement of consumer protection and antitrust laws, prosecution of criminal appeals and some complex white-collar crimes, training and certification of peace officers, and most natural resource and environmental matters. Additionally, the New Mexico Department of Justice works concurrently with New Mexico's 13 district attorneys and other local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to carry out its criminal justice responsibilities and activities.

Why does the job exist?
The Evidence Technician positions to aid in the preservation of evidence within the NMDOJ. The Evidence Technician will have a variety of critical responsibilities and administrative duties within the property and evidence functions of the New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ). These duties will include maintaining the evidential chain of custody and integrity of all evidence and property held by the NMDOJ. This position receives, records, accounts for, stores, safeguards, collects, loads, transports, verifies, and disposes of all items of evidence and all found or abandoned property. The Evidence Technician in conjunction with investigative supervisors and prosecutors and will also collaborate with and arrange for evidence viewing and trial preparation when requested.

- Provide instruction to department personnel in best practices and proper methods of packaging various types of property and evidence.
- Transports and or ships property and evidence to and from various crime labs/police departments throughout the state and out of state.
- Initiates inquiries on property and evidence to obtain the information on ownership, release, and disposition.
- Collects and/or processes shell casings to be tracked for entry into a national database.
- Establish working relationships with assisting agencies and comply with NMDOJ policies and procedures to include New Mexico laws and to maintain proper chain of custody.
- Prepares property and evidence for shipment and/or transport to crime laboratories and other destinations as needed.
- May support investigators and others in collecting, packaging, tracking, and transporting of evidence at crime scenes.
- Prepares items for auction, release, or destruction in accordance with New Mexico State Laws.
- Responsible for the proper disposition of all property in accordance with policy, law, and court orders.

This position serves the law enforcement and prosecutions staff of the New Mexico Attorney Generals Office and the citizens of New Mexico.
Ideal Candidate
A successful candidate will have the ability to use basic computer applications; Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Strong organizational, planning and problem solving skills, have a working knowledge of evidence procedures, evidence rooms, and chain of custody.
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience related to the purpose of the position. Must possess a New Mexico class D driver's license at the time of hire. Due to the sensitive nature of the position, the applicant must: be at least 21 years of age, pass a polygraph, pass a thorough background investigation, and have no felony convictions. Employment Requirements
This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical and is subject to criminal background check and is conditional pending results of criminal background check. Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony offense by a court of this state, any other state or the United States. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver¿s License as some statewide travel is required.
Working Conditions
Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting, including during public meetings and hearings. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, and some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel, including overnight travel, may be required in and out of state. Working in a law enforcement environment, exposure to law enforcement investigations, bio hazard materials, and other items of evidence.
