Job description

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Instruction of Gridworks Registered Apprenticeship Program (GWRAP) in Heavy Equipment Operations. Instruction of Gridworks Registered Apprentices via on-the-job field instruction, electronic learning platforms, and in-person classroom environments. Oversight and administration of performance evaluations according to required testing structures.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructional leadership for Heavy Equipment Operations and Heavy Equipment Operations Safety.
  • Instruction of equipment usage and maintenance best practices.
  • Adherence to GWRAP curriculum, program delivery and testing requirements.
  • Ensure safety and awareness of apprentices and non-apprentice site personnel at all times during on-the-job instruction activities, by managing the machines, equipment, and personnel according to Gridworks safety policies and OSHA requirements.
  • Maintains apprentice instructional records and materials according to GWRAP guidelines.
  • Provides instructional support to GWRAP apprentices to include availability during specified contact times or “office hours”.
  • Perform pre-operation safety, maintenance, or servicing checks to ensure proper functioning of the equipment used for instruction.
  • Ensure company equipment, material, and the work site are maintained according to Gridworks standards.

REQUIREMENTS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES):

  • 6+ years of equipment operation experience required.
  • Degrees or courses from vocational schools in construction equipment operation and maintenance preferred.
  • Previous experience as a technical instructor in a vocational setting, or in a recognized apprenticeship program is strongly preferred.
  • Operational Awareness: Safety-first mentality for instructional activities.
  • Interpersonal skills and teamwork: You must be able to coordinate your instruction activities with those of other workers on busy construction sites, and within the schedules of active projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in general construction and workplace safety practices required.
  • Insurability: must have valid drivers’ license.
  • Ability to travel to/from job site and classroom facilities, reliable transportation.
  • NCCER or IREC certification is a plus, but not required.
  • OSHA-10, OSHA-30 or OSHA-500 strongly preferred.
  • Ability to pass background check and pre-employment and random drug screenings.

Other:

  • Provides input on instructional design, curriculum development and selection as designated by Program Director.
  • Attends audits from accreditation bodies as required.
  • Provides access to required apprentice records on demand.
  • Attends training and meetings.
  • Inform and advise management for observed equipment repairs or maintenance needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

UPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities at this time; subject to change as business needs evolve.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Able to work in varying temperatures.
  • Able to work outside.
  • Able to interface with electronic devices (computers and tablets) in an electronic learning platform required.
  • Able to use printed materials for classroom education required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The most important criteria for an Equipment Operator instructor is to have experience with all types of heavy equipment, and a desire to be an instructor for apprentices that are learning the trade. Patience and the desire to help others learn is critical. Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery, and supervising apprentices engaged in operating machinery is required. Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk, sit, stand, bend and stoop. May be required to lift, carry or push/pull supplies, materials, equipment and/or items weighing up to 50 pounds.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

  • This is a full time position. Evening instruction (both electronically and in-person classroom settings) may be required, but the expectation is a 40-hour work week.

TRAVEL:

  • Ability and willingness to travel to various locations as required within and outside of New Mexico.
