Job Summary
Operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as front-end loaders, excavators, screen plants, and crushers. Operators may make minor repairs and perform simple maintenance on equipment in the absence of a millwright. This includes greasing and simple fixes to maintain a consistent workflow. F.T.G. operators may also fill in as weighmasters or laborers as needed.
Duties include but are not limited to tasks such as:
- Learn and follow safety regulations.
- Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
- Adjust handwheels and depress pedals to control attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, or swing booms.
- Start engines, move throttles, switches, or levers, or depress pedals to operate machines, such as bulldozers, trench excavators, road graders, or backhoes.
- Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.
- Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment.
- Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
- Repair and maintain equipment, making emergency adjustments or assisting with major repairs as necessary.
- Check fuel supplies at sites to ensure adequate availability.
- Connect hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkages, or power takeoff shafts to tractors.
- Operate loaders to pull out stumps, rip asphalt or concrete, rough-grade properties, bury refuse, or perform general cleanup.
- Select and fasten bulldozer blades or other attachments to tractors, using hitches.
- Signal operators to guide movement of tractor-drawn machines.
- Push other equipment when extra traction or assistance is required.
- Keep records of material or equipment usage or problems encountered.
- Operate equipment to demolish or remove debris
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma - or the equivalent (for example, GED) is desirable.
Skills
- Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.
- Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
- Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
- Adapting equipment and technology to serve company needs.
- Determining causes of operational errors and deciding what to do about it.
- Operate heavy equipment such as loaders and excavators with minimal guidance or assistance.
- Communicate effectively using a two-way radio and cell phone.
Work Context
Every location in which the operator works is outdoors. Exposure to the elements and ability to perform all duties within reason is expected. Environments can be dusty. It is essential that the operator is able to wear all of the necessary personal protective equipment including a respirator.
