Responsibilities:The Equine Specialist’s primary role is to monitor equine behaviors in and out of sessions and to promote safety of the equines and clients during sessions. The Equine Specialist is responsible for leading the Equine Learning sessions and conducting educational programs for clients in the absence of the Equine Therapist. This position adds therapeutic value to the Equine Program and sessions by addressing observed equine behaviors that may have a therapeutic benefit for the clients and developing training programs for the equines in collaboration with Supervisor.

Essential Duties:*

  • Monitor equine stress levels and burn-out rates.
  • Facilitate Equine Learning groups.
  • Monitor equine behavior during session to help promote a safer environment and keep detailed notes of equine behaviors observed during sessions and during training session.
  • Provide equine emergency care/first aid as needed.
  • Assist in the process of choosing therapeutic equines and assist with administrative responsibilities as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Supervisor of Equine Program in developing training and enrichment experiences for each equine within the herd.
  • Maintain a regular exercise and training schedule for each equine in the program and delegate training responsibilities, as necessary.
  • Assist with barn chores and stalls as needed, depending upon location.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Five (5) years’ experience working with and engaging clients with mental health issues preferred.
  • Natural Lifemanship, EAGALA, or PATH certification preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience with equines in a professional setting preferred.

Salary Range for this position is $24.00/hr to $27.00/hr
