Salary: Grade 6 ($51,244 - $54,450 Annualized)

POSITION SUMMARY
The Environmental Technician II supports activities within the Environmental Department and reports to the Environmental Department Director in order to meet departmental goals. Performs duties include maintenance and coordination of departmental programs and activities. Primary tasks will include Technical coordination of the Sugar Bush and Wild Rice programs, and functioning as the primary responsible party for maintenance and efficient operation of Environmental Department facilities, as well as oversight of associated departmental tools, machines, equipment, non-GSA motorized vehicles, watercraft and grounds.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi reserves the right to change, amend, add, delete, and otherwise assign any and all duties, responsibilities and position titles as it deems necessary to meet the needs of the government.
  1. Perform routine and preventive maintenance and repairs for Environmental Department buildings, facilities and equipment, ensuring technical operations are in proper running order.
  2. Provide recycling and sustainability services for the Environmental Department and the Tribal Community.
  3. Serve as the main point of contact for all department maintenance and technical aspects of the Sugar Bush and Wild Rice Programs.
  4. Schedule and control the daily working arrangements, ensuring sufficient materials are present to satisfactorily complete their assigned tasks.
  5. Perform a variety of ground and troubleshooting tasks and be proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
  6. Maintain records or files and manuals relevant to Environmental Department power tools and equipment.
  7. Provide preliminary sketches or cost estimates for materials or services.
  8. Drive tractor and operate associated implements.
  9. Maintain commercial kitchen as it relates to the Sugar Shack and have working knowledge of syrup manufacturing process.
  10. Assist with the mowing of lawns and all snow removal as it pertains to natural resources management projects.
  11. General groundskeeping, landscaping and maintenance as needed for Environmental Center.
  12. Assistance with set-up and break-down for events as needed.
  13. Manage inventory of supplies Departmental gardens and associated facilities, as needed.
  14. Live trap animal pests as needed.
  15. Provide leadership to Environmental Department Programs, including Maple Syrup and Wild Rice.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.
To perform the Environmental Technician II job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. These requirements are representative, but not all-inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and ability required to lead as the Environmental Coordinator II.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
An applicant’s education, training and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the incumbent possesses the ability to successfully perform each of the essential functions. The requirements listed below are generally representative of the education, experience, and skills and/or ability required to enable one to successfully perform the essential functions associated with his position:
  1. Knowledge of safe work practices related to job hazards such as tool safety, fuels storage, trip and fall hazards, etc.
  2. Three years of skilled labor experience in carpentry, mechanics and/or equipment maintenance.
  3. Possess and maintain ServeSafe certification within six months of employment in order to maintain maple syrup program credentials.
  4. Excellent working knowledge of Environmental Department and government programs and processes, including Maple Syrup Program.
  5. Basic knowledge and understanding of environmental issues within sovereign tribal communities.
  6. Basic knowledge and understanding of field collection of GPS data.
  7. Strong interest and support for the department in the field of environmental studies and self-sustainable practices.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively through written, oral, and non-verbal communication.
  9. Ability to understand, gain knowledge, and appreciate the differences with the Native American culture and customs.
  10. Ability and willingness to work well independently and cooperatively with others to promote a team-oriented environment.
  11. Ability to be self-directed and an excellent problem solver.
  12. Must maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record; must be GSA certified within three months of employment.
  13. Ability to travel both locally and long distance if required and needed.
  14. Successfully pass a background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle record check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Licensed and/or training certificates in skilled labor, including carpentry, electrical, mechanical, HVAC or other related field.
  2. Two to three years of supervisory experience.
  3. Experience working for a Native American owned company or government.

Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Physical surroundings are workshop and outdoor environments, in addition to a traditional office environment. Requires mobility, frequent walking, standing, sitting stationary and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear; regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to focus on machinery for extensive periods of time. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderately noisy to very quiet. Must be able to work flexible hours when necessary or as directed.

Tribal preference will be applied in accordance with the NHBP Indian Preference in Employment Code which requires that preference in employment be afforded to NHBP members, spouse/parents of NHBP members and Native Americans who meet the minimum qualifications and can successfully perform the essential functions for the position.
