Overview
The program is seeking an individual with education and skill sets in river science and interest in working on river and floodplain efforts in Vermont. This work is performed under the general supervision of the Physical Science section supervisor as part of a smaller team of 4 within the newly
expanded River Science section, with an emphasis on assessing and analyzing the physical condition
of Vermont's rivers and streams. The Rivers Program is responsible for protecting and restoring natural river and floodplain processes to enhance water quality, ecological health, and flood resilience.
The right candidate must demonstrate responsibility, organization, and independence. The position will serve as a regional river scientist for an assigned region and requires a high level of technical, specialized skills in the field of stream science and the ability to conduct Stream Geomorphic Assessments (SGA), quality assuring collected data, providing data synthesis and analysis, and providing recommendations with respect to priority actions and tools to better protect the river resource.

Environmental Factors
Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in biology, microbiology, chemistry, soils science, geology or hydrogeology AND two (2) years or more of experience in environmental biology, microbiology or chemistry, ecology, soils science, geology or hydrogeology.
OR
Master's degree in any biological-life or physical science AND three (3) years or more of experience in environmental biology, microbiology or chemistry, ecology, soils science, or hydrogeology.
OR
Bachelor's degree in any biological-life or physical science AND five (5) years or more of professional experience in environmental biology, microbiology or chemistry, ecology, soils science, or hydrogeology.
OR
Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, chemistry, soils science, geology or hydrogeology AND five (5) years or more of professional experience in environmental biology, microbiology or chemistry, or ecology, soils science, geology or hydrogeology.
OR
One year experience as an Environmental Scientist IV or two years as an Environmental Scientist III.
