Save the Sound lead is a leader for environmental action in your region. We fight climate change and build resilient communities, save endangered lands, protect the Sound, and restore its rivers. PROGRAM BACKGROUND

Save the Sound is partnering with the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound in an effort to raise environmental awareness in young sailors, ages 8-12 years of age. A program is being developed that will engage the sailors and encourage them to become thoughtful about how they can directly affect the health of Long Island Sound.

THE POSITION

The Environmental Programming Intern will implement Save the Sounds efforts to raise environmental awareness in young sailors. This would include preparation, teaching and tracking engagement. The ideal candidate will be excited to share their knowledge of and passion for the environment with children and be willing to travel to various yacht clubs on Long Island Sound.

This seasonal educational internship will last from June 10th, 2024 through August 9th, 2024 and will be focused mainly on the Western Long Island Sound area.

EXPECTATIONS

Intern expectations include, but are not limited to the following abilities:

  • Professionally represent Save the Sound
  • Maintain good communication and respectful relationships with staff, board, program partners, and the general public
  • Adhere to all staff, safety, and program procedures
  • Ensure a safe, professional work environment
  • Engage in professional development activities, as needed, to obtain/renew necessary knowledge


ESSENTIAL TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Complete preparation for 2 hr. block environmental programming sessions
  • Participate in relevant pre-site visits and planning, coordinating with yacht club sponsor, as needed, and managing implementation of project goals according to accepted best practices and standards
  • Coordinate with supervisory staff on project logistics and implementation
  • Teach up to two 2-hour blocks of programming sessions each day to children ages 8-12 yrs.
  • Gather and communicate feedback and change the educational offering accordingly
  • Routinely prepare and maintain tools/equipment before and after programs
  • Maintain strong relationships and communication with project partners and colleagues
  • Complete tasks that could involve heavy lifting (40+ pounds), packs/tools/gear
  • Working outdoors in various weather conditions including hot and cold temperature, sun and rain
  • Other assignments that support STS outreach, and environmental initiatives
  • Must have a clean, valid, state-issued driver's license and daily access to a personal vehicle

Shared Organizational Job Responsibilities

  • Maintaining positive and productive working relationships with all Save the Sound staff members, including providing and receiving constructive feedback;
  • Participating in building productive relationships with Save the Sound's members, external partners, policy makers, and the general public;
  • Completing all administrative work on time, such as timesheets, purchase orders, project reports, and planning documents.


QUALIFICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY

  • Candidates should possess, at a minimum, the following:
  • Strong interest in natural resource conservation, management, and education
  • Interest in educating children 8-12 years about environmental awareness
  • Commitment to protecting and improving the quality of the environment
  • Background in marine biology and/or marine ecology is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize daily tasks to meet program goals
  • Capacity to perform physical labor such as carrying 40+ pounds
  • Strong communication skills
  • Eligibility to work in the United States


TERMS & COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, seasonal internship that provides a stipend of $3,000 for an average work week of 30 hours/week. This position is expected to start June 10th, 2024 and runs through August 9th, 2024. It is not an employee position and does not include benefits. Reimbursement for work-related travel is provided. Some early morning, evening and weekend hours may be required on an as needed basis.
