Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking an experienced Environmental Planner to join our Southern California Environmental Planning Group. This is a hybrid role and can be based out of AECOM’s Los Angeles, San Diego or Orange, CA offices.

The responsibilities of this role include:

  • Management and preparation of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, including but not limited to Categorical Exemptions, Categorical Exclusions, Initial Studies, Environmental Assessments, Mitigated Negative Declarations, Findings of No Significant Impacts, Environment Impact Reports, and Environment Impact Statements.
  • Project management including development and tracking schedules, project budget tracking, invoicing, and coordination with technical staff and subconsultants.
  • Work on environmental documents related to high profile infrastructure, water resources, transportation/transit, roadway, specific plan/community plan/general plan, hazardous materials, and other projects as needed.  
  • Manage small and medium-sized projects and serve as a deputy project manager or task lead on larger, more complex projects.
  • Oversee the work of junior staff and mentor others.
  • Work directly with clients and subconsultants; experience working with Los Angeles area agencies preferred.
  • Assist with writing and coordinating certain technical reports or sections as needed, including Aesthetics/Visual Quality and others. 
  • Support senior staff with marketing pursuits/business development, preparation of proposals, and formulating proposal cost estimates.
  • Conduct occasional site visits, research, data collection, and technical writing.
  • Attend and/or present at project and public meetings and assist in preparing meeting materials and compiling meeting results, including PowerPoint presentations, and other materials.
  • Supports the preparation of permit application packages, and mitigation and monitoring plans.
  • Review and interpret conceptual engineering drawings, such as plan and profile, to ascertain information required for environmental documentation.
  • Interprets and applies applicable government codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Conducts research and prepares statistical reports on land use, physical, social and economic issues through the collection of a variety of statistical data, maps and other graphics.
  • Assists in maintaining project records (e.g., electronic filing, basic database management).
  • Attends occasional evening and/or weekend meetings based on project needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Adobe, Google Earth, OneDrive, and other application programs.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or related field.
  • 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in managing and preparation of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents.
  • A valid U.S. Driver's license is required for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s in environmental studies, Urban Planning or related field.
  • 5+ years' experience successfully managing and preparing CEQA and NEPA documentation
  • Experience as Project Manager or Deputy Manager roles on environmental planning projects
  • Experience preparing NEPA and CEQA environmental documents with extensive knowledge of current regulations and guidance
  • Understanding of the environmental regulatory framework in California, including applicable state and federal laws
  • Interest in or experience with Aesthetics/Visual Quality analyses
  • Interest in or experience with environmental documentation for infrastructure, water resources, transportation/transit, roadway, specific plan/community plan/general plan projects
  • Strong individual and collaborative research and analytical abilities
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the editing, oversight or preparation of technical reports
  • Strong organizational skills, spreadsheet/document tracking skills, and an ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously
  • Actively participated in management of environmental projects including client interaction, schedule and budget controls, and invoicing
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Adobe, Google Earth, OneDrive, and other application programs.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team, identifying what needs to be accomplished and regularly completing tasks.
  • Knowledge of GIS

Additional Information
  • Due to the nature of this role, U.S Citizenship is required.
  • Offered rate of compensation (California locations only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The salary range for this position is $85,000 - $105,000.00.
