Examples of Duties (May Vary by Position)
- Provide information, education and technical assistance on code, regulation and policy compliance requirements and Environmental Health issues to the public in a variety of settings.
- Create, maintain and update files and records.
- Locate properties on appropriate maps; interpret notations made on maps and atlases, and in policies and procedures manual to determine compliance with ordinances and regulations.
- Prepare letters and notices of violation to effect abatement of a nuisance or hazard, and obtain inspection warrant, draw up settlement agreement, file criminal complaints.
- Inspect and provide assistance and/or implement remediation efforts to work towards resolution of Environmental Health issues.
- Issue and process various applications in such major areas as Building, Planning, Utilities, Health, Fire Prevention and Engineering.
- Verify applications for construction permits comply with zoning, land use, health, setbacks and other requirements prior to issuing permits.
- Calculate fees and issue all relative permits.
- Initiate investigation of complaints from the public and from other agencies on environmental hazards such as mold, rodent or insect infestation, garbage or littering in residential, commercial and public properties.
- Contact parties controlling premises and counsel for resolution of complaint.
- Coordinate activities with building inspection agencies, police department and other public agencies.
- Assist in the preparation of case files for legal action and provide testimony in court if enforcement is necessary.
- The work you do might require you to participate in the Title XIX Medicaid Claiming Program.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Knowledge of and the ability to read and interpret maps, property descriptions, charts and graphs.
- Knowledge of and ability to apply basic math skills to work performed.
- Skill in performing research and investigating assigned problems.
- Ability to apply good judgment in making decisions in accordance with various codes and regulations.
- Ability to convey technical information to the public in a clear and concise manner.
- Skill in communicating orally using tact and diplomacy with a diverse population of customers and departmental personnel to provide service and resolve issues.
- Ability to interpret and apply relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations, and departmental policies and procedures.
Associate's degree and one year of experience in Environmental Health or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of work.
Equivalencies Include:- HS Diploma or GED and three years of relevant experience.
Required Certifications and Licensure:
- Possession of a valid driver's license and an acceptable driver's abstract prior to employment.
- Work is performed almost exclusively indoors in an office environment. Exposure to hazards is limited to those commonly found in government office environments.
- The potential for dealing with dissatisfied or angry customers exists, requiring skills in conflict resolution.
- Work involves special physical demands such as lifting and carrying 10 - 25 lbs.
- Duties require the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.)
- Driving a vehicle requiring a license.
- Some travel is required, and is typically local or regional, to meet with clients, conduct business, or attend or provide training. Extensive local travel may be required.
When public health responds to an emergency you may be assigned duties that are outside your regular job description. This may involve responding at any time, including nights and weekends, with possible deployment to locations other than the department.
