Job Duties
The Central Virginia Health District is seeking to hire an Environmental Health Technical Specialist to act as a district Milk Specialist. The position is responsible for evaluating plant compliance with the regulatory requirements, investigating product complaints, collecting samples of milk and milk products, and performing facility and equipment plan reviews. The person selected for this position will also be assigned duties in either the onsite sewage program or the retail food program and must be either a licensed Onsite Soil Evaluator or a Standardized Food Specialist.Must complete training and obtain VDH Certified Milk Sanitation Officer credential within 18 months of hire.The person selected for this position will also be assigned duties in either the onsite sewage program or the retail food program and must be either a licensed Onsite Soil Evaluator or a Standardized Food Specialist.
Serves as Environmental Health Technical leader, mentor & subject matter expert as
an advanced practitioner for the district in one or more EH programs such as food
sanitation, on-site soils evaluation, private well inspection, rabies abatement,
communicable disease investigation, migrant labor camp inspection, classification of
shellfish growing areas and investigation of complaints. Performs complex
Environmental Health functions, provides consultation and training to EH staff, assists
OEHS in conducting training and may provide formal input into performance
evaluations of EH staff. Must have completed training and maintain one of the
following certifications: VDH Certified Milk Sanitation Officer, VDH Certified Food
Safety Standardization Officer, VDH Certified Onsite Sewage System Technical
Specialist, National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) State Standardization Officer.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to explain and interpret detailed and complex rules and regulations;
communicate effectively
• Skilled in proper utilization of tools required in proper testing of food
handling equipment
• Knowledge of Environmental Health principles
• Knowledge of microbiology and epidemiology as related to communicable
disease
• Skill in evaluating the operation of assigned program area(s) and application
of the regulations
• Ability to interpret, apply, and enforce state and local regulations governing
Environmental Health
• Must have completed training and maintain one of the following
certifications:
o VDH Certified Milk Sanitation Officer
o VDH Certified Food Safety Standardization Officer
o VDH Certified Onsite Sewage System Technical Specialist
o National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) State Standardization Officer
Additional Considerations
NEHA Registered Environmental Health Specialist credential.
Previous training or experience related to dairies and milk sanitation.
