Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The EH&S Intern develops and supports a comprehensive and integrated Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) program at Fred Hutch. Provides support to comprehensive industrial hygiene, biosafety and radiation safety programs to identify, monitor, evaluate, communicate and control Center occupational hazards.  Th EH&S interns supports EH&S managers, specialists, coordinators and technicians to meet safe environment of care standards for patients, visitors, staff and affiliates that work in or enter any Fred Hutch facility.

 

This position will be onsite everday from 8:00am-5pm pst at our South Lake Union Campus. The internship will run between June-September. Final dates will be determined based off the candidate's class schedule. 


  • Assist in developing lab safety program policies and procedures in accordance with all applicable regulations including consulting with the Environmental Health and Safety Program Managers.
  • Provides support for the hazardous chemical inventory process and database, verifying that data is accurately maintained and that quantity limits in designated areas do not exceed fire code storage limits.
  • Provides support to industrial hygiene program, including evaluating workplace exposures to hazards such as chemicals, noise and physical hazards.
  • Consult with Fred Hutch employees regarding recognized and potential occupational exposures and investigate occupational accidents and illness as necessary.
  • Support as needed the chemical, biosafety and radiation safety laboratory audit programs.
  • Support lab safety and biosafety projects/design and provide safety training for labs and healthcare clinic staff, safety audits, evaluate use of hazardous materials, prepare reports and present findings as directed.
  • Advise/train employees regarding the proper storage of hazardous chemicals and compressed gases, and the preparation of hazardous wastes for disposal and transportation of non-waste hazardous materials.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree candidate in industrial hygiene, Environmental Health, public health or closely related scientific field

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Two years related experience, preferably in a healthcare/research setting
  • Experience with various software and database programs
  • Must possess good writing, analytical, verbal communication and computer skills
  • Must be able to wear a respirator and required personal protective equipment
  • Must be capable of lifting 40 pounds
  • Able to partner successfully with multidisciplinary teams from all areas of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
  • Able to effectively listen to and acknowledge the needs and perspectives of stakeholders
  • Able to accurately represent and respond to these needs in support of Safety and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center strategic initiatives
  • Able to collaborate with external affiliates UWMC, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Northwest Hospital, Evergreen, and other affiliates                                  
  • Excellence in clear, concise communication in a variety of contexts and media, including conversations, email, meetings, formal presentations, emergencies and incidents, and prepared reports
  • Expert at adapting to emergent needs, constraints, and barriers
  • Perform other duties in support of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center as assigned
  • Able to adjust work schedule (including some evenings and weekends) and location to accommodate emergent needs
  • Able to effectively influence the actions and opinions of others
  • Able to work as a partner with the organization’s leadership in achieving solutions

The hourly pay range for this position is from $20.00 to $25.45 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
