Position Summary
Reporting to the Plant Manager the Safety Supervisor will be responsible for managing health and safety within the Bayonne, New Jersey site ensuring a safe, accident-free workplace. The Safety Supervisor will train managers, supervisors and employees on best practice workplace safety. They will inspect the organization’s facilities, complete root cause analysis and make recommendations to monitor and ensure sustainability of corrective actions. The safety supervisor will work cross-functionally to address and mitigate safety concerns and foster an inclusive safety-first work culture.
The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable and well-versed in health and safety initiatives and regulations. They will lead and influence the safety culture of all employees. Ability to handle multiple competing demands in a fast-paced environment is critical for success.
Position Responsibilities
- Manage EHS programs at all HNI locations to ensure a safe and accident-free work environment and provide coaching and mentoring to colleagues.
- Work with plant management to develop a safety roadmap to zero injuries and world-class safety performance
- Plan and deliver programs to train managers, supervisors and employees on safe work behaviors.
- Leads continuous improvement initiatives for health, safety, and industrial hygiene compliance gaps identified through corporate audits, internal audits, third party audits, and regulatory inspections
- Partners with Plant Maintenance and Engineering to implement engineering controls and minimize safety and occupational hazards.
- Inspect facilities and equipment to detect existing or potential accident hazards or environmental incident and determine and make recommendations on corrective or preventive measures.
- Establish plant health and safety policies/procedures to ensure compliance with company policies and federal/state/local regulatory requirements.
- Work cross-functionally to analyze safety situations and recommend improvements.
- Analyze incident data to identify trends and incident types that can be prevented.
- Oversee the incident investigation process to determine root cause and timely corrective action.
- Drive safety culture on the plant floor through partnerships with all departments.
- Develop training programs for all levels of operations with the objective to have a safer, more efficient, engaged, and productive plant and field department.
- Ensure all safety records are kept in accordance with State and Federal regulations including OSHA logs and training documents.
- Responsible for understanding and complying with applicable quality, environmental, safety, and health regulatory considerations. If accountable for the work of others, responsible for their understanding and compliance.
- Support Plant Manager and Corporate environmental in maintaining applicable environmental records and compliance with regulations
- Own the environmental calendar and ensure all tasks/permits/audits are executed timely
- Oversee the Workers Compensation and Employee Return to Work (RTW) Programs. Partner with HR to oversee RTW steps.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree plus three (3) years of health, safety or combination of experiences or seven (7) years of health/safety experience in lieu of a degree
• Applied knowledge and working understanding of OSHA, CalOSHA, regulatory compliance, experience with inspections, incident investigations, remediation, process safety, contractor safety, safety training, hazard reviews, and job analysis.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record required. Required to obtain a New Jersey driver’s license within thirty (30) days of hire
• Ability to respond to off-hour incidents as needed
• Ability to coach Culture Change teams/events
• Good organizational skills with an ability to effectively prioritize
• Ability to build effective relationships resulting in a safe workplace
