ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH INTERN - Seasonal Employment

Hourly Pay $20 / hour; 12-Week Limited Term Grant Funded Position

Brief Under the general direction of the Environmental Supervisor, assists

Description the Environmentai Health staff in the operation of the vector

of mosquito breeding and exposure to mosquitoes. Implement tasks
related West Nile Virus source reduction such as identify, document
and/or remediate sources of standing and or stagnant water. Conduct
food service investigations to identify and control non-mosquito
vectors such as mice and rats. Collect, enter and analyze data.

Identify and document discarded tires, cans, plastic container,
ceramic pots and other unused water-holding containers on private
and commercial properties. Perform other work-related duties as
assigned. Work will be performed both outdoors and in an office
setting.

Required Must be 18 years old prior to beginning employment; A student
Education, actively pursuing a Bachelor or Master's degree in Environmental
Irainincf and Health, Public Health or other science related field; Understand and
Experience: apply basic entomology and pest control principles; Able to

effectively use Microsoft Office Suite software; Ability to
communicate effectively and courteousiy with co-workers and the
public; Must follow ail safety rules and regulations of the Village;;
Must possess a valid Driver's License.

JOB IDENTIFICATION

Position Title: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH INTERN (Seasonal)

Division: Environmental Health

Reports to: Environmental Health Supervisor

Supervises: None

JOB PURPOSE

Responsible for assisting the Environmental Health staff in the operation of the vector
surveillance and control program, to enforce state and local iaws and ordinances related to
public health and to carry out the deliverables of public health grants; and to respond to
and resolve citizen complaints regarding nuisances and reported epidemics.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts ongoing surveillance and controi activities for mosquitoes, ticks, rodents and
other potential vectors of human disease, and conduct surveillance of animals that provide
a reservoir for disease producing organisms.
  • Conducts tasks related to West Niie Virus (WNV) source reduction such as identify,
document and/or remediate sources of standing and/or stagnant water.
  • Responds to inquiries, investigate complaints, conduct evaluations, and provide technical
consultation to help reduce or eliminate public health hazards and nuisance conditions
associated with vectors of human disease; and conduct training activities for Skokie area
agencies and organizations to promote integrated pest management of human disease
vectors.
  • Identify and document discarded tires, cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots and other
unused similar water-holding containers on private and commercia! properties.
  • Identify properties with tail grass or overgrown vegetation.
  • Conduct pubiic education regarding the importance of reducing or eliminating sources of
mosquito breeding and exposure to mosquitoes.

  • Coliect data, enter data into computer and analyze data.
  • Conduct food service investigations to identify and control non-mosquito vectors such as
mice and/rats.
  • Conduct surveillance and prevention of non-mosquito vectors such as ticks, rodents,
nuisance birds and other vectors of human disease.
  • Other related duties.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Distribute West Nile Virus and other vector control brochures and posters.
  • Assist Environmental Health staff in the inspection of food establishments for vector
control.
  • Assist Environmental Health Practitioners in the investigation of citizen complaints
regarding vector control nuisance violations.
  • Enforce state and Iaea! laws, codes and regulations; prepare letters of compliance for
violations.
  • Assist in responding to voice mails for various health and human services related
programs.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS I ABILITIES

  • Able to effectively use Microsoft Office Suite software
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills, abie to multi-task and prioritize
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteousfy with co-workers and the public
  • Ability to write well
  • Must follow all safety rules and regulations of the Village
  • Understand and apply basic entomoiogy and pest control principles
  • Basic principles of chemistry, bioiogy, microbiofogy and toxicology. Principies and
procedures of record keeping. Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and
regulations

EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE

  • A student actively pursuing a Bachelor or Master's degree in Environmental Health, Pubiic
Health or other science related field.

OTHER NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS / LICENSES

  • Valid Driver's License.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The work functions of this position are representative of medium work exerting up to 50
pounds of fore occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10
pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Whiie performing the duties of this job, the empioyee is regularly required to stand, walk,
reach with hands and arms, stoop, knee! and crouch. Must have adequate hearing in order to
communicate with co-workers and the public.

Work is performed outdoors subject to year-round climate conditions. Work is also performed
indoors, In an office-type area, that is quiet, except for office/communJcations equipment
background noises.
