Job Description: The Environmental Health & Safety Officer (EHS) is responsible for the management and coordination of all activities as they relate to safety, Health and environment in order to reduce occupational injuries, illnesses and the accompanying financial losses. The EHS will serve as a consultant to managers and supervisors on accident-prevention and loss-control enhancements and provides interpretation of related policies and procedures. Coordinate all training programs related to safety, ergonomics, accident prevention and first aid.
Duties and Major Responsibilities:

· EHS program development and administration, environmental monitoring, consultation, regulatory compliance, education and training.
· Environmental compliance responsibilities include but are not limited to hazardous materials management including SDS sheets and annual chemical inventory list, RCRA hazardous waste management, environmental inspections, liaison with EPA and DOE governmental agencies, air and water emission monitoring, universal waste. Maintain the proper permitting, while ensuring compliance and monitoring.
· Conduct safety audits, safety committee meetings, accident investigations, hazard and ergonomic assessments, work site evaluations, workplace environmental monitoring and hazardous chemical evaluations
- Investigate accidents/injuries and complete the accident/injury report form. Work with HR who will maintain contact with insurance companies to ensure timely processing of claims.
- Ensure calibration of all safety equipment
- Analyze injury and hazard data to develop strategies for continued reduction in risk exposure and accident and injury reduction
- Enforce compliance with Health and Safety rules, procedures, and regulations
- Prepare and present safety information to senior management, safety committees, production and production support groups
- Interface with departments across the organization, with particular emphasis on working with the Operations team to improve safety
- Interfaces with OSHA and other regulatory agencies on matters pertaining to employee/facility Health and Safety
- Provides recommendations to management for the improvement of the safety program
- Adheres to all PMI organizational policies and procedures
- Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position
Education & Experience:
· BS Degree preferred in the Occupational Safety/Environmental Sciences. May substitute education for 5 years of EHS experience.
- Certificate of Completion for Shipyard Competent Person issued by a Certified Marine Chemist within the past year
- OSHA 5400, 5410, 3095, 3115 & 521
- Required or ability to obtain 24 or 40 Hr HAZWOPER, Forklift operator, 8-Hr Hazardous Waste Management certifications; hazardous materials awareness training; ECATTS training
Skills & Qualifications:
- 5 years Marine Industry experience
- Demonstrated organizational and communication skills, both written and oral
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office
- Extensive knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of industrial safety and OSHA regulations and standards
- USL&H/workers' compensation laws, including claims and report filing
- Shipbuilding methods, State and Federal Health and Safety regulations
- Characteristics and effects of toxic substances
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction to complete daily duties
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Driver’s license
Physical/Mental Involvement & Environmental Factors:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to climb stairs, ladders, masts, and scaffolding
- Must be able to work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair
- Must be able to climb on and around ships
- Must be able to handle stressful situations
- Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching
- Must be able to climb vertical ladders to perform ship inspections
- Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates
- Must be able to wear a respirator and other safety equipment
- Periodic inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, and observing tools, equipment and/or machinery while in operation
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 70% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering
