Compensation: $85,000 - $90,000 / year
Description
OverviewThe New York Public Library is a free provider of education and information for the people of New York and beyond. With 92 locations-including research and branch libraries-throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, the Library offers free materials, computer access, classes, exhibitions, programming and more to everyone from toddlers to scholars, and has seen record numbers of attendance and circulation in recent years. The Environmental Health and Safety Manager will have overall responsibility for assisting the Environmental Health and Safety Director with protecting the Health and Safety of all New York Public Library (NYPL) Staff, Patrons and Visitors. The EHS Manager will assist the EHS Director by performing: hazard assessments, site safety inspections, indoor air quality investigations and ergonomic assessments throughout the NYPL system. The position also requires diligent recordkeeping and other administrative duties related to maintaining the NYPL Health and Safety Program.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:
  • Ensuring that all NYPL employees arrive to and leave work in the same condition (unharmed) and creating a safe and healthful environment for our patrons
  • Management of our Emergency Cardiovascular Care Program, which involves coordination with our training vendor for Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) use, Cardiopulmonary Respiration (CPR) and first aid, and coordination and performance of the monthly inspection of all NYPL-owned AED units
  • Management of NYPLs COVID PPE distribution program
  • Identifying Health and Safety issues throughout the library network and providing realistic corrective actions to be taken, and following-up to ensure identified hazards are adequately mitigated
  • The creation of project documentation, and reporting of project status and performance, specifically to analyze the successful completion of short and long term departmental goals

Teach:
  • Staff to identify potential Health and Safety hazards, how to report them, and how we can help them mitigate those hazards

Learn:
  • How the Office of Environmental Health and Safety interacts with other divisions and departments
  • How to realistically mitigate identified and potential hazards
  • The unique operations and potential hazards that exist with the library system

Improve:
  • The ability of NYPL to provide Library Patrons and Staff a safe and healthful environment

Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:
  • Understand how the library is organized and physically laid out
  • Understand the specific goals and role of the Facilities and Environmental Health and Safety team in relation to other departments
  • Know their departmental contacts
  • Train on how we perform inspections and assessments of Library branches

3 months, this person will:
  • Perform fundamental inspections and assessments independently
  • Have a firm understanding of our Emergency Cardiovascular Care Program and begin to manage it independently
  • Understand and manage our PPE distribution program
  • Understand the Health andand Safety training matrix
  • Resolve problems and create action plans

6 months and beyond, this person will:
  • Perform in-person Health and Safety training sessions for staff
  • Perform advanced inspections and assessments independently
  • Manage assigned projects independently

Responsibilities
  • Serves as the Program Administrator for the Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) program. The program includes the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid. Program Administrator responsibilities include:
  • Performing the administrative functions of the AED program:
    • Ensures all AEDs are registered with local EMS and routinely inspected
    • Manages NYPL's training vendor, schedules staff training sessions and coordinates room bookings
    • Manages a vendor for medical direction of the ECC Program
  • Performs frequent touch points with both staff and equipment to ensure program compliance with City and State regulations and Program effectiveness
  • Manages NYPLs COVID PPE inventory and distribution for all sites
  • Conducts ergonomic assessments and other assignments as needed in support of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety
  • Conducts site safety audits/inspections
  • Conducts routine HVAC assessments for NYPL sites
  • Respond to employee Environmental Health and Safety related complaints
  • Assists with investigating employee injuries and incidents
  • Performs chemical Safety Data Sheet (SDS) reviews and database management
  • Performs Personal Protective Equipment evaluations
  • Assists in performing Job Hazard Analyses
  • Other miscellaneous EHS-related tasks as required

Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & CertificationsA Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in industrial hygiene, occupational Health and Safety, environmental science, engineering, or any STEM related field.
Required Experience
  • Four years of relevant work experience in the EHS field
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working in the Environmental Health and Safety of a large public or private institution.

Required Skills
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments, with a high degree of accuracy, and meet deadlines in a high pressure complex environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills (verbally and written)
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of applicable City, State, Federal, OSHA and NFPA workplace safety standards and health codes
  • Strong computer skills with experience using MS Office Suite and Google Suite products
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and a clean driving record

Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises two Environmental Health and Safety Analysts
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to analyze and present complex data sets using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of database management on Microsoft Access and integrated workflow management systems.
  • Knowledge of Ergonomics
