Thurston County Public Works is recruiting for an Engineering Technician Ito join our dynamic, energetic, and innovative Survey team. The successful candidate will perform a full range of engineering support assignments related to engineering, survey, and construction in both the field and office within the Public Works Department. Incumbents at this level generally perform tasks that are guided by established procedures or as directed by their lead worker, supervisor, and/or manager.
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Prepare, write, and review, for completeness and accuracy, a variety of work to include reports, procedures, plans and documents for Public Works projects.
  • Performs general engineering calculations, drafting, testing, data/material collection, database maintenance, analysis and related reporting or report preparation.
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control zones for the safety of workers, motorists, and pedestrians.
  • Operate, maintain, and clean various survey, engineering and construction instruments and tools.
  • Proactively communicates, provides information and is responsive to inquiries, resolves problems, and meets with the general public, contractors, property owners, developers, engineers and other stakeholders.
  • Collect data and reduce field notes for electronic data processing including but not limited to calculating elevations, material quantities, sight distance, etc.

  • Associates degree in survey, civil engineering, or closely related field and;
  • Two (2) years experience in related field and office experience performing support technical tasks in survey, engineering, or construction.
  • Additional experience may substitute educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
  • Experience using computers and relevant software.
  • A valid Driver's License. (As a condition of employment, employee must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License within 30 days of employment.)
  • Depending on area of assignment applicants may be required to have specialized experience or certifications associated with the position (e.g. Supervision, Bridge Inspection, flagger certification, etc.)
  • Knowledge and ability to accurately:
    1. Interpret engineering plans.
    2. Read, write and review legal descriptions.
    3. Research survey records using WebXtender, title companies, local land surveyors, and Thurston County records.
  • Efficiently use Carlson SurvCE and or Trimble Access data collector software.
