Position Description:

The Engineering ManagerPower Engineering position is responsible for a newly formed team within the Operational Support Group. The primary responsibility of the team will be to provide technical input on a wide variety of projects across the KM assets where scope includes new grid connections, substation modifications and/or medium/high voltage electric drivers and switchgear. Additionally, this team will be responsible for leading or supporting arc flash studies and study renewals in all Business Units.

The Manager will work with internal departments including Project Management, Operations, Business Development, EHS, Gas Supply, etc. to identify system priorities and appropriate required support for that Natural Gas Business Unit.

The Manager is responsible for developing and managing a G&A expense budget for their team and must effectively develop, track and forecast expenses.

This position reports to the Director of Engineering Design and Drafting, who reports to the Vice President of Project Management and Engineering.

Additional specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The Manager will promote a team culture that is centered around customer service and focused on providing engineering support that promotes safety, reliability, improved performance and efficiency.
  • The Manager will focus on strengthening the effectiveness of the team and building knowledge through training and mentoring.
  • Establishing and maintaining a high level of communications and flow of information early in all projects (and support functions) within the various groups and stakeholders.
  • Leading and directing the improvement of the Kinder Morgan Engineering Design standards and applicable O&Ms.
  • Lead the identification of areas within the Company’s various electrical engineering standards that can be standardized across multiple business units.
  • Overseeing internal and external aspects of engineering design including value added project management, estimating, and development of operational procedures and best practices.
  • Leverage the team to respond to unplanned outages related to electrical equipment failures.


Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Lead, direct, supervise, evaluate and develop engineering staff.
  • Reflect the KM corporate values of Integrity, Accountability, Safety and Excellence in all communication and actions.
  • Target Zero EHS Behavior - Establish expectations, ensure education and confirm performance for employees and contractors through observation, conversation and evaluation.
  • Ensure engineering support is completed with a focus on safety and in compliance with all applicable regulations and Company policies.
  • Active engagement with all budget, cost control and forecasting responsibilities including OPEX, CAPEX and G&A costs, as applicable.
  • Making independent decisions regarding work assignments, personnel, and budget in response to direction received in the form of corporate and team goals, annual objectives, business requirements and company policy.
  • Establish engineering best practices and ongoing continuous improvement activities.
  • Action Decision committee (ADC committee) – participate in stakeholder reviews on revisions of various standards and O&M documents. Represent Engineering Design on the Natural Gas AMLC.
  • Developing and building strong customer relationships and providing excellent customer service to both internal and external to the Operations Support Group (OSG).
  • Monitor the department’s performance through tracking of detailed KPI’s and improving efficiency by aligning departmental processes with customer (business unit, PM groups, etc) requirements.
  • Demonstrate cohesive teamwork and provide quality staff work through interaction with operational, financial, commercial and other support group peers.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of project status, current cost & schedule, forecasted results, risks & opportunities, quality and performance for all required projects.
  • Lead and organize multi-department meetings and decision-making processes.
  • Develop performance milestones for all tasks. Measure progress, evaluate performance and provide clear feedback against those milestones.
  • Ensure company engineering standards are kept up to date and followed at all times.
  • Ability to review and handle company confidential information as it relates to project development and/or asset acquisition.

Position Requirements

Education: Engineering Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school required.

Experience / specific knowledge:

  • 5 – 10 years applicable Engineering experience
  • 2 or more years’ experience in a leadership role.
  • Current working knowledge of the industry and the willingness to maintain that knowledge.
  • Possesses knowledge and experience in design and drafting for large industrial projects.
  • Knowledge of pipeline and/or terminal engineering, construction, and operations is preferred.
  • Expertise/experience in continuous improvement activities.
  • Knowledge of Company financial & budget activities.
  • Demonstrated success in change management.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Innovative problem solving
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel

Certifications, licenses, registrations:

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Working conditions:

  • Primarily office environment, occasional field office or field/plant site.
  • Working after hours, nights, weekends, holidays and on-call as needed
  • Travel estimated at 10% to visit project sites, customers, and direct reports


Supervisory responsibility:

  • Electrical engineering staff
  • Direct reports will primarily be in the Houston office but could also be assign to various regional offices.
  • Leadership of other multidisciplinary teams as assigned


This position includes a discretionary annual incentive plan. Job level and pay commensurate with experience and skill set.
