About the Role
The Data Platforms team is responsible for the governance, processes, architecture, storage, reliability, accuracy, monitoring, and infrastructure surrounding our internal data sets. The team has an organization-wide impact by capturing the data to inform the user experience, product, editorial, growth, and financial decisions at Wirecutter and the New York Times.
The Engineering Manager for Data Platforms manages the data engineers on the team and is accountable for the team's roadmap and results. You will be expected to delegate by default, collaborate with stakeholders and leadership to set direction, provide constraints, prioritize, and communicate progress, changes, and outcomes for the data team's work. The Engineering Manager for Data Platforms is also expected to provide a best-in-class culture to support and grow their multiple direct reports through mentorship, coaching, and advocacy.
This is a management-track position which will report directly to the Director of Platform Engineering.
Responsibilities:
Performance management, professional development, and overall health of a diverse team of 4+ data engineers.
Hiring and onboarding members to a diverse and inclusive team.
Cultivation of an inclusive team culture with a respectful and collaborative environment
Accountability and development of the roadmap, prioritization and re-prioritization decisions, celebrations, process, and end results of the data team.
Defining success, setting constraints, highlighting potential trade-offs, and enabling the team to collaborate on cross team dependencies.
Building strong cross-functional relationships by transparently communicating scope, trade-offs, timing, uncertainty, and prioritization decisions to stakeholders.
Basic Qualifications:
You have 3+ years of experience in software or data engineering.
You have 3+ years of experience working on challenging problems with ETL processes, complex data queries, data architecture, and OLAP data modeling.
You have 3+ years of experience advocating for technical needs, team members, and steering multiple stakeholders when needed.
You have 2+ years of experience leading and facilitating decision making for technical teams.
You have 2+ years of managing distributed, or hybrid, teams.
