The Opportunity
WSDOT Bridge and Structures office is seeking an Engineering Intern for this summer in Tumwater, WA. This is a unique opportunity for college students or recent college graduates to gain experience in the field of structural engineering. Assignments will provide the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the practical application of engineering procedures, concepts, and techniques in an on-the-job environment. In this role, you will assist the Bridge Design Office in delivering Project commitments in a timely manner.
What to Expect
Under the direct guidance and mentorship of an experienced Engineer, TE Interns will assist in a variety of entry-level engineering duties, to include:
- Gather necessary data to complete structural engineering work on bridge projects.
- Use various software programs to perform structural calculations to support project related component design.
- Understand instructions and timelines in order to manage time, plan projects, and meet deadlines.
- Prepare clear details of design components that can be drawn in CAD by a detailer.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Current enrollment in a degree program for Civil Engineering or another closely related field of study, to included completion of at least two semesters or three quarters of study in bachelor's or master's curriculum at an accredited college or university.
- The ability to interpret engineering plans.
- Proficiency with computers, office software, and engineering software.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to travel to job sites throughout assigned geographic area.
It is preferred candidates have:
- Structural Engineering Course emphasis in college.
- Ability to solve problems analytically and logically.
- Skilled with MSOffice applications.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with diverse groups and individuals both verbally and in writing.
- Good organizational skills.
- Ability to perform site visits to various structures with other office engineers.
Important Notes
- Internships are temporary employment opportunities, expected to last 3 - 6 months, for students working toward an undergraduate degree (RCW 43.06.420).
- This internship is anticipated to work 32-40 hours per week.
