The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region is looking for an Engineering Geologist 1/2 Flex to help us Keep Alaska Moving!
What you will be doing:The Engineering Geologist 1/2 you will be part of a team in the Central Region Materials Section that works cooperatively to develop Geotechnical Recommendations in support of bid-ready documents for highway and aviation related transportation projects. You will be preparing field exploration plans, perform as the field lead of drilling crews performing geotechnical investigations, and write geotechnical reports summarizing fieldwork for development of geotechnical recommendations in addition to other duties. You will be working in both office & field environments, you will also be traveling periodically to rural communities in small aircraft.

The Central Regional Materials Section consists of a 20-plus member team of Geotechnical Engineers, Engineering Assistants, Engineering Geologists, and Lab staff who work cooperatively to develop geotechnical design recommendations in support of Highway and Aviation Design projects. You will be an integral part of this team providing site-specific geotechnical data and communicating their observations and data to the engineers.

The working environment you can expect:Our office is located at 5820 East Tudor Road in Anchorage, which is a satellite office to the Materials Group & Regional Lab located at 5750 East Tudor Road and our main district branch at 4111 Aviation Avenue. You will have a private office with windows facing east toward the Chugach Mountains. Daily work is centric to field investigations in collaboration with peers and other functional staff that are friendly and enthusiastic about their work. Local fieldwork typically does not require overnight travel, however out of town fieldwork typically requires multi-night stays.

  • Geotechnical Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the investigation and evaluation of subsurface soil or geologic conditions and properties for the purpose of designing stable foundation systems, earthen structures, or the remediation of subsurface conditions.
  • Geology: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of the origins and structure of the earth, including the physical forces that have shaped it and its physical and organic history.
  • Geospatial Science:Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the collection, storage, analysis, visualization, and distribution of geographic based data and maps.
  • Accountability: Holds self and others accountable for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results. Determines objectives, sets priorities, and delegates work. Accepts responsibility for own actions and decisions. Complies with established control systems and rules.
  • Writing: Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience.

Special Note:Valid Driver's License Required
Fieldwork includes drilling projects in the Anchorage and Mat-Su valley that do not require overnight travel. Travel required for projects outside of a 50-mile radius from Anchorage do typically require overnight stays of two nights to two weeks or more. We typically attempt to switch out staff on a rotating basis when projects require greater than two weeks away from Anchorage to allow time back in the office.

Minimum Qualifications
Engineering Geologist 1:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geological engineering, or a closely related subdiscipline.
Engineering Geologist 2:A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geological engineering, or a closely related subdiscipline.
AND
One year of professional engineering geology experience. This experience is met by service as an Engineering Geologist with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
OR
A master's degree from an accredited college in geology, engineering geology, or geological engineering.

FLEXIBLY STAFFEDThis position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineer Geologist 1or Engineering Geologist 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
