The U.S. Consumer Services and Enterprise Digital & Data Technology Team brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), AI/ML, marketing technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and automation, grounded in our data technology model that prioritizes data governance. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments

How will you make an impact in this role?

American Express is seeking a perceptive and driven Engineering Director who will lead the platform transformation designed to enable a world class, seamless and hyper personalized experience for our Card Members across all channels. The role will lead a hard working, global engineering organization responsible for the end-to-end suite of technologies that enable real-time, cross-channel personalization of Amex content while bringing in the best industry takeaways and innovations. The incumbent will lead the development of innovative new pioneering technologies-based Product; designed to enable real time, personalized interactions with customers, champion the re-use of enterprise assets and build capabilities with a platform attitude where applicable, and design a more streamlined and effective approach globally while driving Cloud adoption.

Key Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the development of Enterprise Product & Platform using the company’s Data & Cloud platform.
  • Partner with Customer Personalization Technology team to effectively use established customer data for the purpose of driving enterprise personalization capabilities.
  • Dramatically improve customer experience and business matrices, analytic capabilities, and quality of actionable business insights to drive performance across Amex businesses & Personalization Capabilities
  • Scale globally with the business and partners across multiple geographies.
  • Build and develop team, capabilities, supporting processes and infrastructure to deliver above business improvements, building upon existing Amex teams and resources.
  • Partner with Data scientists, Architects, Engineers & Product Owners to lead the design and implementation of world class, cross-channel personalization capabilities using advanced analytics and real time context awareness.
  • Ability to navigate through the evolving trends in contextually aware personalization in the industry.

The ideal candidate will be a transformative leader with a track record of developing innovative personalization technology platforms that improve both customer engagement/experience and business performance. This leader will have deep expertise in designing products that use advanced analytics and machine learning, especially within a consumer-oriented driven environment. They will have a strong experience partnering with data scientists, product and channel teams. This leader will be comfortable solving complex problems and navigating uncharted territory. They will be highly adaptable and have the proven ability to shift and course correct as the digital landscape and customer behavior continue to evolve. They will have excellent listening and cognitive skills and the ability to influence, shape and drive dialogue by building “buy-in” across the organization. Ideally, this person has experience in a progressive, consumer-oriented technology company of significant scale. They will have a reputation as a strong leader and team builder who is adept at attracting and developing great talent, having led teams across multiple geographies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree in computer science, computer engineering, or other technical discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • 16+ years of demonstrable experience building and deploying large scale software products.
  • 2+ years of experience developing complex real-time capabilities using multi-tenant hybrid cloud strategy.
  • 10+ years of experience with Object-Oriented Design and coding with variety of languages.
  • Expertise in programming knowledge in Java - Solid understanding of data structures and common algorithms
  • Large scale software product engineering experience with contemporary tools and delivery methods in a complex environment, i.e. Agile/SAFe, Test Modernization, CI/CD, Cloud Solutions, and DevOps practices
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels across functions, from both technical and non-technical perspectives alike
  • Outstanding influential and collaboration skills; ability to drive consensus and tangible outcomes, demonstrated by breaking down silos and fostering cross communication process
  • Proven experience attracting, hiring, retaining and leading top engineering talent and building impactful teams in a highly competitive market
  • Experience managing in a fast paced, complex and dynamic global environment with the ability to convey passion, energy and intensity
  • Keeps abreast of industry trends and technology evolution and is a change agent with external technology contributions
  • Bring a strong technical foundation; able to engage the team on coding practices, architecture, design, get under the hood of complex integrated architectures, coding systems, and interface design.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of Personalization experience with broad knowledge of the customer behavior landscape including relevant products and tools will be an added advantage
  • Understanding of Kubernetes, Container Orchestrations, Docker, and Cloud Native technologies will be an added advantage.

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
