Engineering Designer A

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  Works under the direction of the Sr. Design Engineer in the Engineering Division.  Plans, designs, and directs engineering projects in assigned civil engineering area requiring independent judgment in the evaluation and substantial adaptation of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.  Provides supervision to professionals and technical staff in the completion of plans and specifications, collection of field survey data, and field inspections; performs complex design responsibilities involving the preparation of design plans, plats, specifications, contract documents, and cost estimates for the construction, maintenance, and alteration of city structures and facilities.  Performs detailed engineering computations.  Interprets and analyzes survey field data.  Inspects various construction sites around the City.  Assists in reviewing construction plans for compliance with standard engineering practices and City regulations.  Research new developments in engineering techniques, construction methods and materials, and makes recommendations accordingly.  Communicates on a regular basis with professionals and nonprofessionals regarding construction projects, city policies and regulations, etc.  Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform calculations and to prepare documents.

OTHER FUNCTIONS: Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned from time to time. 
 
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with management, staff and the public.  Requires the ability to conduct site visits involving traversing uneven land on foot.  Requires the ability to view plans and drawings, and the ability to operate personal computer and automobile.
 
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:   Majority of work is performed in an office environment with some outdoor work required to visit work sites.  Must travel throughout the city to attend meetings and conduct site investigations.

Annual:                $48,868.30 - $74,776.00

Pay period:          $1,879.55 - $2,876.00

 

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or currently in school with the ability to obtain degree within six (6) months as a condition of continued employment. Must possess a certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or have the ability to obtain certification within twelve (12) months of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment.

 

 

Gen.15 - Engineering Designer AA (054ED)

Annual:                $54,733.38 - $84,281.60

Pay period:          $2,105.13 - $3,241.60

 

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and two (2) years of professional civil engineering experience and possession of an Engineering - In - Training Certificate (EIT); or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Experience with AutoCAD, TerraModel software, and GIS preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment.

Annual:                $69,423.12 - $102,398.92

Payperiod:          $2,670.12 - $3,938.42

 

Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and four (4) years’ experience in civil engineering design with emphasis in an engineering field appropriate to work assignment with at least two (2) of those years in a supervisory/lead capacity; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. License to practice engineering in the State of Tennessee or a state that has reciprocity with Tennessee. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a condition of continued employment.

 

E.18 – Design Engineer Sr. (051DE)

Annual:                $78,447.98 - $109,827.12

Pay period:          $3,017.23 - $4,224.12

 

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and seven (7) years of progressively more responsible experience which was primarily involved in general civil engineering with at least four (4) of those years in a supervisory capacity; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform the essential job functions.  Preferred experience may include, but not be limited to the following areas: Roadway Design, Drainage Design, Structural Design and Analysis, Traffic Engineering, Sewer System Design, and Land Development. Work experience may vary based on assigned service center needs. License to practice engineering in the State of Tennessee or demonstrated ability to obtain within six (6) months required and maintain as a condition of continued employment.  Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license as a condition of continued employment.
