What you will be doing:
The Air Permits Program is hiring an Engineering Assistant or Associate for a permit writing position. The incumbent will draw on their skills in math, science, and technical writing to create the permits necessary to facilitate economic development while protecting Alaska's environment.

The incumbent will join our dynamic team in the Air Permits Program where we ensure the cleanliness of the air by issuing permits to industrial sources of air pollution. We generate the enforceable requirements necessary for these facilities to be constructed and operated in manner that protects the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

As a new hire you will have hands-on training, peer team interaction and technical guidance from the leadership team and other experienced permits staff. The working environment you can expect:The incumbent will generally work in an office environment in downtown Anchorage with the possibility of hybrid telework. Whether working in-office or remotely, our team works collaboratively to share knowledge and expertise, and ensure the success of our team. Air Permits Program staff typically work a traditional workweek schedule with little required travel.

  • Permitting: Knowledge of appropriate state and federal laws and regulations used for assessing applications, and the ability to use technical knowledge to issue legally defensible permits and approvals for various operations.
  • Environmental Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to protect and improve the quality of the environment and its resources; and to monitor, control, abate, and prevent pollutants.
  • Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: Uses a logical, systematic, and sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Treats others with courtesy, sensitivity, and respect. Considers and responds appropriately to the needs and feelings of different people in different situations.

Minimum Qualifications
Engineering Assistant 1 minimum qualifications (Range: 17)
An ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in engineering.
Or:
A non-ABET-accredited bachelor's degree with a major in engineering.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
Special Notes:
"ABET" means Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology per 12 AAC 36.990(7).
Some positions require the incumbent to have specific education and/or experience in a particular branch of engineering. This requirement will be addressed in the Position Description and job posting.
An applicant who, within nine months, will obtain an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.
Engineering Assistant 2 minimum qualifications (Range: 19)
An ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in engineering.
AND
One year of engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (or the equivalent) with the State of Alaska or elsewhere.
Or:
A non-ABET-accredited bachelor's degree in engineering.
AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
One year of engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 (or the equivalent) with the State of Alaska or elsewhere.
Or:
An ABET-accredited master's degree in engineering.

AND
An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
AND
Two years of engineering experience as an Engineering Assistant 2 (or the equivalent) with the State of Alaska or elsewhere.
Or:
