How will you make an impact?
You will be working within a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to support an R&D team performing new product development and sustaining projects using Ion Torrent instruments for both research use only (RUO) and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) applications. This candidate will own the hardware support and maintenance of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms at the Carlsbad, CA site and help direct part-time service resources when applicable. They will help train users in basic troubleshooting and manage all aspects of instrument service on site.
What will you do?
- Provide on-site service and maintenance for Ion Torrent instrumentation including debugging, troubleshooting, and repairing faulty instrumentation for R&D teams.
- Collaborate with development team and instrument users to identify novel issues and develop solutions. As needed, interface with field teams about common issues and similarly, paths to solutions.
- Develop support and training material for the broader Thermo Fisher support organization and Field Service teams for existing and in development instruments.
- Follow established procedures to perform and document planned maintenance (PM), instrument qualifications (installation, operational, and performance – IQ/OQ/PQ), software upgrades, engineering change order (ECOs) and help maintain local spare parts inventory.
- Track and quantitate failures and failure modes on internal instruments, including pulling necessary information from internal and field service teams. Learn how to use and search service record database.
- Identify and help design new tools or tests to improve troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities for NGS instrumentation.
- Build up the troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities of the R&D teams, training them on support processes, escalation pathways, and rudimentary service and support.
How will you get here?
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Biology, or related discipline.
Experience
- 6+ years working in a technical field in science or engineering
- Previous customer support or service experience and resolving/troubleshooting problems in a creative manner
- Career path that includes relevant teaching, mentoring, or training experiences
- Experience in next generation DNA sequencing and/or technical knowledge of the Ion Torrent platform is a plus
- Experience working with in vitro diagnostics (IVD) products or services is a plus
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to travel up to 10% domestically (several times per year) to other R&D sites (training, additional help)
- Ability to lift 30 pounds and service floor-standing instrumentation on wheels
- Proficiency in repairing complex instruments in various labs on site for time-sensitive end users (e.g. critical R&D timeline)
- Highly motivated, energetic, and skilled at prioritizing rapidly changing tasks. Ability to work in a dynamic environment with a hard-working, multidisciplinary, remote team
- Some experience with Linux, basic programming and/or scripting languages, bioinformatics and instrument control software is a plus

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $96,000.00–$135,000.00.This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
