The Chevron Richmond Engine Laboratory is a research and development facility used to evaluate existing and future fuels and fuel additives technologies. Expansive lab facilities include engine and vehicle test stands, chassis dynamometer vehicle testing lanes for both light and medium duty applications, engine parts rating and analysis facility, mechanics garage and other supporting facilities and specialized analytical equipment. The Engine Lab Engineer supports the day to day troubleshooting of these engine stands, vehicles, and testing facilities. Additionally, they also serve as a key contributing team member in collaboration with external vendors, internal fuels engineers and OEMs on research projects and facility modifications and upgrades. This position reports to the Engine Lab Manager in the Fuels and Products Technology (FP&T) group in the Downstream Technology & Services (DT&S) division of the Chevron Technical Center (CTC).
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
Test Facility Management & Troubleshooting: Ensure engine stands, chassis dynamometers, emissions equipment, controls systems and safety systems are operating as expected to ensure testing specifications and safety requirements are maintained for the duration of the testing window. This includes occasional off hours support.
Testing & Controls Strategy Design: In collaboration with other team members, create and manage test programs and instructions and support the design of controls strategy to ensure testing program meets desired objectives.
Test Facility Commissioning & Project Management: In collaboration with on-site resources, external vendors, OEMs, industry consortia and/or external laboratories support scope development, design, and execution of new construction and/or facilities commissioning and upgrades.
Operational Excellence (OE) and Safe Work Practices (SWP) Champion & Steward: Lead and support Management of Change (MOC), Isolation of Hazardous Energy (IHE), e-Permit to Work (ePTW), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Human and Organizational Performance (HOP), Quality Written Procedures (QWP) and Process Safety reviews and evaluation efforts within the Engine Lab. This includes mentorship and/or training of operations staff and may include participation in Best Practices sharing or Learning Teams with other laboratories.
External and Internal Collaboration: Collaborate with internal and external partners and laboratories to improve test quality, reduce downtime, and improve cost efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
BS or MS degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical strongly preferred)
Demonstrated history of strong attention to safety and operational excellence principles
Knowledge on the practical operation of modern internal combustion engines, including critical engine systems, engine component function and design, and failure diagnostics.
Demonstrated project management and execution skills, including the ability to work independently, with excellent project planning, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, in the development and presentation of proposals, and performance results. Demonstrated teamwork and relationship-building skills that illustrate a passion for teamwork and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with setup, use and troubleshooting of instrumentation and data acquisition systems
Experience with fault detection, fault handling and automotive diagnostic tools and troubleshooting
Experience working for or with engine OEM or Engine Testing Laboratory (e.g. automotive, heavy-duty, off-highway)
Experience with controls algorithm design and strategies interpreting vehicle communication protocols. Knowledge of basic computer programming fundamentals

The anticipated salary range for this position is $114,500 – $226,300. The selected candidate’s compensation will be determined based on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
