New Chapel EMS serves as the primary EMS provider for Clark and Floyd Counties in Southern Indiana, covering more than 500 square miles for both a primary 911 response and interfacility transfers. Offering 10, 12, and 24 hour shifts, NCEMS has a wide variety of available scheduling options to meet the needs of our employees as well as the communities we serve. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service in a safe manner to provide prompt, professional, courteous, and efficient care as necessary.
- Transports the patient to a Hospital Emergency Department or appropriate pre-determined destination..
- Reports to the Shift Commander and Command Structure of New Chapel EMS.
- Prior to initiating patient care, the employee will 'size-up' the scene to determine that the scene is safe, identify the mechanism of injury or nature of illness, determine the total number of patients, and request additional help if necessary.
- Works within the applicable scope of practice to provide patient care according to clinical protocols and safety requirements.
- Conducts a careful examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness/injury and assists other medical personnel, as necessary.
- Provides appropriate, prompt, and efficient care of the patient and stabilization of condition prior to transport.
- Lift and move patients as required to provide optimum care.
- Provides safe and careful handling of the patient in moving to the ambulance vehicle.
- Communicates with patient and/or patient family members to provide information and assurance that proper/courteous care is being given.
- Provides safe and efficient transport of the patient while constantly monitoring the patient and providing any appropriate continuing care within the applicable scope of practice and protocol.
- Drives the ambulance and provides map reading support to minimize call response time.
- Reads road maps, drives vehicles, and accurately discerns street signs and address numbers.
- Provides orderly transfer of the patient to destination.
- Upon arrival at destination with patient, responsible for cleaning, restocking supplies and placing the unit back in service as soon as possible.
- When necessary, in the absence of other qualified rescuers and within limits of your training, use procedures to gain access to and disentangle patients who require extrication.
- Where a patient must be extricated from entrapment, assesses the extent of the injury, and gives all possible emergency care and protection to the entrapped patient.
- In the absence of other qualified personnel, controls the emergency scene, including parking the vehicle in such a way as to minimize further danger in the roadway as well as controlling the actions of bystanders.
- Obtains information regarding the emergency from dispatch, communicates other emergency services as needed during the call. In the absence of, or as directed by more qualified personnel, communicates with receiving hospitals regarding patient status.
- Ensures compliance with all needed documentation required by New Chapel EMS to accompany ePCR submission including, but not limited to: Patient Signature Forms, Physician’s Certification Statement (PCS), et al.
- Ensures ePCRs are complete and correctly submitted prior to going off-duty.
- Will make daily checks of the vehicle equipment/systems and completes check forms as required.
- Reports needed equipment and vehicle repairs to Shift Commander and Maintenance Personnel as appropriate.
- Responsible for precepting new employees and students/observers as directed.
- Respects and holds in confidence all information of a confidential nature obtained in the course of professional work.
- Protects the public by not delegating to persons less qualified, any service which requires the professional competence of the clinician’s level of licensure and/or certification.
- Reassures patients and bystanders by working in a confident, efficient manner.
- Avoids mishandling and undue haste while working expeditiously to accomplish a task.
- Attends continuing education and refresher training programs as required.
- Work collaboratively and in a professional manner with all allied health and public safety personnel.
- Effectively communicates with other responders, dispatchers, and Officers via phone or radio.
- Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
- Must be able to frequently walk, stand, lift, carry, and balance at times.
- Must be able to lift, drag, hoist, and carry different types of equipment and other objects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must have the ability to work past scheduled shift with little or no notice.
- When necessary, and within limits of your training/equipment, may perform firefighting duties including but not limited to fire suppression, extrication, rescue, and HazMat mitigation.
- Refuses to participate in unethical behavior and assumes the responsibility to expose incompetence or unethical conduct of others to the appropriate authority in a proper and professional manner.
