Job description

Would you like to give back to your community in a very real, necessary way?

Dedicating a few hours a month as a volunteer could be the way to do that. Whether you’re brand new to EMS or a seasoned veteran, here’s how to volunteer. Remember, volunteer means there is no pay for your services, but the personal benefits and education can be fulfilling!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why does Chenango Ambulance need volunteers?

In many of our nation’s rural/suburban areas, call volume is so low that it’s not profitable for private ambulance companies to establish offices with full-time employees. In these towns, such as the Town of Chenango, EMS is a volunteer service provided by neighbors and community members.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are the requirements for becoming a volunteer?

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age. No experience is required to begin volunteering. We will teach you CPR and some basic first aid to get you started, then we will teach you how to drive the ambulance. Then, if you are willing, we will send you to EMT class for free! If you aren't sure if this is for you, we actually have our new applicants do a few "ride alongs" with an ambulance crew before they become a volunteer. This way you can experience what it is like before actually committing to becoming a volunteer.

Don't want to volunteer on the ambulance? We also need volunteers to help with vehicle maintenance, upkeep of the building and grounds, and clerical work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’m in college, can I still volunteer for EMS?

Absolutely! EMS work is actually a great job for students. In between calls, you’ll be allowed to study for classes or complete coursework. We are willing to work with your schedule, and your hours as a driver or EMT crew chief may be recorded for PA or medical school, if that’s your chosen route.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a full-time job, but still want to be involved in EMS.

You can still volunteer! The time commitment is minimal. Of course we will take as much time as you are willing to provide, but our minimum time commitments can add up to as little as 8 - 12 hours per month on average.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

No matter how you choose to volunteer your time in EMS, it’s a valuable, unforgettable experience that will allow you to serve your community. Any questions feel free to message us or email us.
