Job Summary:


Adjunct instructors are part-time employees responsible for providing quality instruction to thestudentsof Bay Mills Community College. Instructors workunder the direction of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the respective Department Chair. Instructors must meet academic and professional qualifications, be dedicated to academic excellence and a student-centered education, and support themission and objectives of Bay Mills Community College.


Courses:


HL 125 Emergency Medical Technician Basic: This program provides an understanding of the role of an Emergency Medical Technician and prepares the student to manage pre-hospital emergencies. This course teaches the basics in airway management, CPR, bleeding, and shock management. It also educates the student on the recognition and the management of medical and traumatic emergencies. Successful completion of this course qualifies the student to deliver primary pre-hospital care in emergencies. With proper licensing, this program may allow the student to function on an ambulance, fire department, safety officer, park ranger, or other agencies until more advance pre-hospital care is available. The student must also complete 48 hours emergency department and ambulance clinicals.


HL 126 Emergency Medical Technician Specialist: Successful completion of this course qualifies the student to deliver more advance care during an emergency and to be recommended for NREMT evaluation at the EMT-Specialist level. This course includes increased understanding of anatomy and physiology of common medical and traumatic emergencies. It will also increase the skills performed including: advance airway management, intravenous and intraosseous cannulation, and some medication administration. The student must also complete 40 hours emergency department and ambulance clinical.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver and facilitate instruction in accordance to the signed contract, course syllabus, and published course catalog.
  • Meet all scheduled classes/labs/clinics for the entire allotted time.
  • Use teaching methods and media designed to reach students of varying educational and experiential backgrounds to allow each student the opportunity to master the course objectives.
  • Provide course syllabi which include specific measurable course objectives, explicit grading criteria and scale, prerequisites, student responsibilities, sequencing of instruction, assignments, etc.
  • Assess students' mastery of course content and provide feedback on a continual basis both to the student and to the Assessment Coordinator.
  • Maintain and submit records as required by the Office of Academic Affairs, Office of the Registrar, the Department Chair, and the Assessment Coordinator, meeting prescribed deadlines.
  • Implement and adhere to the college's Assessment of Student Learning Program.
  • Recommend reference and instructional material to the Department Chair and the college library.
  • Schedule and maintain any necessary hours of on-campus activities to include course planning and preparation, instruction, student advising, and general office hours.
  • Participate with college committees and various college activities as requested or assigned, including meetings and events which may be scheduled outside the instructor's designated class hours.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the BMCC administrative student management software system as it relates to classroom management and the advising of students. Maintain working knowledge of the MOODLE system.
  • Support and participate in departmental recruiting efforts to maintain sufficient student population to sustain the department.
  • Follow the college procedures and submit all required documentation for instructor absences, student complaints, violations of academic dishonesty, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Department Chair in assessment and classroom-based research and assist in developing and refining curriculum as needed.
  • Other duties may be requested within the scope and duties of the position and contract.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in curriculum development and instructing students individually and in groups.
  • Knowledge or experience in alternative teaching strategies such as group projects, hands-on learning, practical applications, computer assisted instruction, distance learning or team-teaching.
  • Knowledge orexperience in academic advising.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with others, college and departmental committee experience preferred.
  • Knowledge or experience working with people of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs.
  • Knowledge or experience in working with Native Americans, in an educational setting preferred.

Education and Experience:


  • Minimum educational requirement is an Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in a Health Care Related field.
  • HL 125 requires EMT Basic State License, Instructor Trainer License; HL 126 requires Advanced EMT License, Instructor\Trainer License.
  • Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS) and BLS instructor
  • At least 3 years of field experience.
  • At least 3 years of instructing initial education preferred.
  • Experience working and/or teaching in Tribal communities is preferred, specifically at a tribal college.
